At two in the morning, the headquarters building of the Qi Gong Association loomed like a steel giant against the night sky, exuding an air of coldness. Occasionally, distant dog barks echoed, adding to the desolation.
Lin Yuan, dressed in a stealth suit, clung to the icy wall like a gecko. He moved cautiously, afraid to make even the slightest sound. Although the suit was high-end, the special concealment talisman from Su Jiu'er pressed against his back emitted an indescribable odor. "Does this thing really work? It feels like I've got a piece of stinky tofu stuck to me," Lin Yuan thought to himself, mentally complaining about the smell that made him feel like a walking piece of rotten tofu, likely to attract a swarm of "sensitive-nosed" guards.
Taking a deep breath, he tried to ignore the strange scent and focused his mind, activating his Gazing Ability. Oddly enough, ever since it had been struck by lightning last time, it had become exceptionally sensitive, as if he had opened a third eye.
The complex network of Lingqi within the building appeared before him like a 3D projection, vibrant in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet—brighter than neon lights. "Infrared? No problem," Lin Yuan scoffed as he followed the guidance of the Lingqi pathways, effortlessly avoiding all infrared detectors and slipping into the ventilation duct like an eel. The duct was narrow and filthy, filled with dust and unknown objects, reminding him of his childhood days crawling through dog holes—a truly “unpleasant memory.”
“Report: Abnormal energy fluctuations detected in ventilation duct area C,” announced the AI Monitoring System in the laboratory with a cold electronic voice that sounded devoid of emotion, like an unfeeling tape recorder.
“What? Is it a mouse that has turned into a spirit?” The Captain of the Guards scratched his head in confusion. “At this hour, even mice are more dedicated than us!” he muttered. “Hurry up and check! We can’t have any monsters sneaking in.”
Several guards armed to the teeth rushed toward the ventilation duct with fierce determination but found nothing except for a pile of mouse droppings. The air was thick with a musty odor mixed with the “fragrance” of mouse feces—it was suffocating.
“Captain, there’s nothing here! Is the system malfunctioning?” one guard asked while pinching his nose in disgust.
“Who do you want me to ask? This broken system malfunctions every few days! It’s probably some programmer sneaking in overtime to play games and messing up the code!” The captain kicked the ventilation duct with a loud bang.
Lin Yuan crouched inside the duct, covering his ears and cursing silently, “Come on! Be gentle! My poor heart can’t take it! If I fall down and end up half-paralyzed, are you going to take responsibility?”
He continued to move cautiously; the duct twisted and turned like a maze, making him feel like a lost rat. Finally, he reached the core area of the laboratory.
Before him stood a massive Energy Reactor emitting an eerie blue glow. Surrounding it were various complex instruments and circuits that resembled scenes from a sci-fi movie. Countless indicator lights blinked incessantly, producing beeping sounds as if performing an electronic symphony.
Han Lingyun stood in front of the reactor, holding a device resembling a game controller, pressing buttons incessantly like an elementary school student engrossed in a video game. Her brow was furrowed, and she muttered to herself, seemingly engaged in some complex calculations.
"What is this woman doing? Is she playing Super Mario or something?" Lin Yuan thought to himself, finding the scene somewhat amusing. Here was a cold and aloof beautiful scientist, completely absorbed in a "game"? Meanwhile, he activated the special device that Su Jiu'er had given him, a small gadget similar to a USB drive, to start recording experimental data. This device had cost Su Jiu'er a fortune on the black market and was said to be capable of copying any electronic data—an essential tool for any household or even for more nefarious purposes.
Suddenly, Han Lingyun spun around, her icy gaze piercing through Lin Yuan's hiding spot as if she could see right through him. "Who’s there?" Her voice was like ice, sending chills down his spine.
Lin Yuan's heart sank. "Oh no, I've been discovered! This woman's sixth sense is too strong! Could it be the legendary 'third eye'?"
He steeled himself and jumped down from the ventilation duct, putting on an innocent smile. "Hi there, beautiful! Working late, huh? You must be tired!" He attempted to lighten the mood with a casual tone, but inside he felt as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
Han Lingyun scoffed. "Working late? I'm saving the world! Who are you to trespass into the Core Laboratory?" Her tone dripped with disdain, as if she were looking at an insignificant insect.
"It’s all a misunderstanding!" Lin Yuan quickly explained. "I’m just a delivery guy who took a wrong turn… Look, here’s your Spicy Crawfish—extra spicy, no cilantro!" As he spoke, he pulled out a bag of chips from his pocket, trying to bluff his way out of the situation.
"Delivery guy? Do you think I’m stupid?" A glint of murderous intent flashed in Han Lingyun's eyes. "It seems you’re a spy sent by the Qi Yun Investigation Bureau!" She saw right through Lin Yuan's flimsy lie; his poor acting was an insult to her intelligence.
Suddenly, a gleaming dagger appeared in her hand—jet black and radiating a chilling aura that made it clear it was no ordinary weapon. She lunged at Lin Yuan with lightning speed.
Lin Yuan quickly dodged, breaking into a cold sweat. "Hey now, let’s talk this out! No need for knives or guns! I really am just delivering food; look at my order!" He fumbled for his phone while evading her attacks, desperately trying to show her an order that didn’t exist.
Han Lingyun pressed forward relentlessly, each strike deadly. Lin Yuan could only flee for his life, utterly defenseless against her swift and fierce movements. She was like a cheetah ready to tear its prey apart.
"With such little skill, you dare come here to die?" Han Lingyun taunted him, her voice filled with contempt as if she were merely toying with a mouse.
As Lin Yuan dodged and pondered his next move, a sense of desperation washed over him. "Am I really going to meet my end here today? No way! I haven't lived enough yet! I haven't married or held my grandchildren!"
Suddenly, an idea struck him, and he shouted, "Jiu'er, help me!" His voice was filled with despair and helplessness, as if he were pleading for divine intervention.
Han Lingyun was momentarily taken aback; she hadn't expected Lin Yuan to shout such a bizarre thing. Caught off guard, she hesitated just long enough for Lin Yuan to seize the opportunity. He quickly pulled out the talisman that Su Jiu'er had given him and haphazardly stuck it onto Han Lingyun. The talisman radiated a strange energy, as if imbued with some mysterious power.
Instantly, Han Lingyun's movements slowed down, resembling a drunken person swaying unsteadily. Her gaze became unfocused, as if she had lost her bearings.
Taking advantage of her disorientation, Lin Yuan grabbed the experimental data and turned to flee. He dashed away like the wind, terrified that Han Lingyun would suddenly regain her senses.
"Stop right there, you little brat!" Han Lingyun shouted angrily, but her body betrayed her as it collapsed to the ground. Her voice was filled with rage and frustration, yet she was powerless to prevent Lin Yuan's escape.
