In the conference room of the Product Department for the KPI Evaluation Meeting, Chen Ruzhou and Huang Dandan sat together, their demeanor intimate.
Huang Dandan wore a finely tailored business suit today, which accentuated her elegant demeanor.
The two of them sat noticeably apart from their colleagues, whispering to each other with an air of flirtation that was palpable.
Even from behind the screen, I could feel the sparks flying between them.
Just that afternoon, Chen Ruzhou had mentioned wanting to pursue her, and by evening, they were already deep in their romance.
As the meeting transitioned into the Team Building activity segment, Huang Dandan was selected to partner with a male colleague for a compatibility test.
Predictably, Chen Ruzhou immediately volunteered.
The colleagues began to cheer and tease.
Huang Dandan gracefully adjusted her skirt and stepped forward.
Chen Ruzhou stood beside her with calm confidence, and together they seamlessly completed one game after another.
Until the final game, whether by accident or design, Chen Ruzhou suddenly lost his balance and fell toward Huang Dandan.
Screams erupted in the conference room.
Amidst the raucous cheers from everyone, Chen Ruzhou leaned down and kissed Huang Dandan on the lips.
They embraced in a kiss that seemed to last an eternity, completely oblivious to their surroundings, parting only after three long minutes.
During those three minutes, I stared at the screen without blinking, nearly forgetting to breathe.
The pain in my heart felt as if it were being torn apart.
“Tsk tsk tsk, Wan Wan, do you see it clearly now? Look at how things are, and you still can’t let go?”
Xiao Mu sighed as she turned the camera towards the quiet tea room.
“Don’t blame me, Wan Wan. If I don’t let you see it with your own eyes, you won’t be able to move on.”
My throat was dry, and the voice that came out was unrecognizable even to me:
“Yeah, I don’t blame you.”
It’s all my fault for being so foolish for so long.
I thought that being allowed to stay by Chen Ruzhou’s side as his capable subordinate meant that position would always belong to me.
“I just can’t stand him, Chen Ruzhou. Knowing that you’ve liked him for so many years, he pretends not to know anything while watching you sink deeper and deeper. You saw it just now; I really hope you think this through and don’t waste any more time on him…”
“I won’t,” I interrupted her, calmly stating:
“I’ve made up my mind. I’m going to accept the offer from Guangzhou Branch.”
“But you have to promise me to keep it a secret for now.”
To stop myself from hesitating any longer, I opened my email in front of Xiao Mu.
Without a moment’s hesitation, before the deadline for the Guangzhou Branch offer, I clicked the “Accept” button.
Xiao Mu was naturally overjoyed, dancing around. She had been urging me to develop my career in Guangzhou for a long time; the internet industry there was thriving, with many more opportunities.
But because I had made a promise with Chen Ruzhou when I joined the company to work together on the AI Innovation Project, which he valued the most.
It was a dream he had been envisioning since the start of his entrepreneurial journey.
So even though I wasn't particularly fond of the northern climate and wasn't that interested in this tech-heavy project, I still treated it as my goal over the past three years.
After years of working together, our parents were supportive of our entrepreneurial endeavors.
Everyone, including myself, believed that once Chen Ruzhou and I achieved success, it would be natural for us to be together.
But now, I couldn't find any reason to stay.
Or rather, after today, if I continued to follow Chen Ruzhou around like before, I would look down on myself.
All I wanted now was to get as far away as possible; it didn't matter where, as long as it was without Chen Ruzhou.
He was in the north, so I would head south.
I opened my computer and began organizing the project documents, preparing for the handover.
As I looked at the codes filled with our shared memories, a sudden sense of disconnection washed over me.
