"You dare to hit me?" Zhao Xinrong covered her burning cheek, filled with rage. She certainly did not think that Lin Rumei was saving her.
With so many prominent figures from Hong Kong Island present tonight, being slapped in public by Lin Rumei only fueled her anger.
The commotion drew the attention of those around them, and most were criticizing Lin Rumei. After all, it was inappropriate to resort to violence in such a setting.
Zhao Xinrong's parents, alarmed by their daughter's predicament, hurried over and attempted to exert pressure using the Zhao family's influence. However, Lin Rumei and her father, Lin Shuang, remained unfazed. "I was saving her!" Lin Rumei said coldly to Zhao Xinrong's parents.
"You hit my daughter and still dare to say you were saving her? Nonsense! Who do you think you are? Even if you are the son of Hua Xia's Richest, you have no right to be so arrogant," Zhao Xinrong's father shouted angrily.
If Lin Shuang and Lin Rumei had offered a polite apology, the Zhao family might have chosen to downplay the incident. However, the Lin family not only resorted to violence but also presented a grandiose excuse, which was infuriating.
"President Zhao, please don't be angry. We genuinely want what's best for your daughter. You can offend anyone, but it's best not to offend Mr. Jiang," Lin Shuang advised earnestly.
"Lin Shuang, you are considered a prominent figure on Hong Kong Island. Why have you become so timid? To show such respect to a young man from the mainland is truly laughable," Zhao Xinrong's father scoffed.
"President Zhao, I am only advising you out of respect for our past acquaintance. It would be wise to step back before Mr. Jiang gets angry," Lin Shuang said as he took a step forward, his gaze intense.
The Zhao family felt a twinge of fear towards Lin Shuang; after all, he was a figure from the underground world who operated in darkness. Although the Zhao family had deep roots in Hong Kong Island, they still held some trepidation towards such underground forces.
"Lin Shuang, don't go too far! Do you really think our Zhao family is afraid of you? You underground big shots are nothing but a joke; it would be better for you to tone it down," Zhao Xinrong's father replied darkly.
"I have already been quite restrained; otherwise, I would have let my fists do the talking," Lin Shuang raised his fist, revealing a fierce glare. As an underground boss, his imposing presence was undeniable; the Zhao family members were merely businesspeople and could not match his ferocity.
However, being intimidated by Lin Shuang left them feeling humiliated.
Just as they found themselves in a dilemma, a voice rang out from afar.
"Who dares to cause trouble in my Liu family?" The crowd parted as members of the Liu family descended the stairs.
The speaker was Han Baiying, the matriarch of the Liu family's third branch and the mother of Liu Toukang and Liu Jiyue.
Since Liu Toukang returned from the Golden Triangle last year, the Liu family's pharmaceutical company developed a new drug called Divine Medicine. This brought fame to both Liu Toukang and Liu Jiyue; now, the third branch held the highest status within the Liu family.
With the patriarch bedridden and her two sons thriving, Han Baiying had become the de facto leader of the Liu family, commanding respect from both the first and second branches.
Today marked her son's engagement banquet, and someone causing a disturbance here greatly displeased her.
"Lin Shuang, with the Liu family here, I am curious to see whether they will side with you or me," Zhao Xinrong's father sneered before quickly walking up to Han Baiying to accuse Lin Shuang.
