Sister-in-law can stand up for Brother, and Brother can protect Sister-in-law as well.
But what about Zhang Heng and me?
Is there such a thing as love between us?
No.
There is nothing at all.
I slowly took off the ring from my left hand and threw it harshly onto the ground.
“Zhang Heng, let’s get a divorce.”
I said expressionlessly.
Zhang Heng looked at me in disbelief: “Tang Jing, have you lost your mind?”
I raised my tear-filled eyes to look at him: “Zhang Heng, are you the one who’s gone mad or am I?”
“You’re willing to put me in a difficult position for your mother and sister, so why should I have to compromise for you?”
“Zhang Heng, I’m tired. Tomorrow morning at nine, you’re coming with me to the civil affairs bureau to handle the paperwork.”
Zhang Heng’s expression changed drastically: “Tang Jing, do you really have to make it so final?”
I shook my head with a bitter smile: “It’s not that I’m making things final; it’s that your family is too much to bear.”
“Zhang Heng, I wish you happiness.”
With that, I pushed my chair back and walked out.
The cold wind outside brushed against my face, making me shiver involuntarily.
I paused at the door, pulling my down jacket tighter around me.
At that moment, I heard footsteps approaching from behind.
Turning around, I saw my Sister-in-law and Brother walking towards me.
My Sister-in-law was holding a coat in her arms. "Jingjing, it's quite cold outside. Let me walk you home."
Brother nodded in agreement. "Yeah, it's late, and it's not safe for a girl to be out alone."
My Sister-in-law draped the coat over my shoulders and tucked my loose hair behind my ear. "Jingjing, have you made up your mind?"
I looked at her gratefully. "Sister Ma Yuan, thank you. If it weren't for your protection, I might still be lost in confusion."
She chuckled softly. "Don't call me Sister Ma Yuan! Just call me 'Sister'!"
Brother smiled at me as well. "From now on, you can just call me 'Brother-in-law.'"
My Sister-in-law shot him a glare. "The girl hasn't even agreed yet, and you're already making plans?"
Brother feigned innocence. "I'm just eager to hold my future nephew!"
My Sister-in-law rolled her eyes at him. "Even if you want to hold a nephew, you need to see if others agree first!"
I couldn't help but laugh at their playful banter.
I wondered how the Zhang Family would feel witnessing this scene.
However, looking at their family, all cheerful and lively, it seemed they hadn't taken the earlier argument to heart at all.
"Sister Ma Yuan" patted my shoulder and said, "Jingjing, you don't need to say anything. I understand everything."
"Actually, I noticed before your wedding that Zhang Heng wasn't a good person. But I was afraid you would be straightforward like me, so I didn't dare to remind you."
"Besides, your family said that Zhang Heng treated you well. I thought as long as he was good to you, the family issues wouldn't matter much."
"I never expected that Zhang Heng would turn out to be someone who bullies the weak and fears the strong. His family is also very biased towards sons; they actually let you handle all the household chores by yourself."
"Jingjing, don't worry. From now on, I will be your strongest support."
"Sister Ma Yuan" looked at me with concern and said, "Honestly, I didn't want to get involved in this matter. After all, the Zhang family hasn't treated me well either. I was afraid that if I spoke up for you, my mom would say I was meddling."
"But when I saw your parents' behavior at the wedding that day, I just couldn't hold back."
I asked her in confusion, "What do you mean?"
"Sister Ma Yuan" smiled and said, "Jingjing, do you remember how your parents gave each server a big red envelope on your wedding day?"
I nodded and replied, "Yes. My dad said the staff worked hard on the wedding day, so he gave them extra red envelopes."
