Watching them playfully banter, I wondered why I was overthinking things. Wasn't this nice as it was?
"Alright, let's hurry back. We still need to help Yu Yan tidy up her room," I said.
Once in the car, I took out all my belongings, reluctantly bidding farewell to them. "Here, you guys take this and go brush it off," I said, referring to the items I was leaving behind.
"Yay! Brother Zhao Lun is the best!"
The car filled with the cheerful shouts of the three girls, and seeing them like this brought me joy as well.
As soon as we reached home, I noticed the black box sitting at the entrance. Just a quick glance made me anxious. I hurriedly opened the door and shoved the black box under my bed. "Mom, are you really just leaving a gun lying around like this? Aren't you afraid someone will see it and call the police?"
By now, it was already evening, and the three girls began to show signs of fatigue, yawning repeatedly.
"Yu Yan, I'll make your bed first. After your shower, you can go straight to sleep," I said.
"Okay, thanks, Brother Zhao Lun," she replied with a sweet kiss. Of course, Ouyang Zhirou and Lin Mu Xi witnessed this; they said nothing but each leaned in for a kiss as well.
"How could I refuse?"
I returned the gesture, kissing each of them on the forehead. Just as I was about to turn to make Yu Yan's bed, Ouyang Zhirou called out to me.
"Zhao Lun, wait a moment. We need to talk."
"What is it?"
The three exchanged serious glances for a while before Ouyang Zhirou finally spoke up. "You’re too soft-hearted; it's easy for you to get taken advantage of or even lose your life. Being kind is good, but you also need to be tough. You have to be more cunning, just like your dad. We don’t want you to lose your life; you’re not just living for yourself—you’re living for us too!"
Seeing their serious expressions made me reflect on myself. They were right; I needed to change—for myself and for them.
"Thank you; I’ll remember that."
I hugged each of them tightly before heading into the empty room to make Yu Yan's bed. After finishing that task, I went to take a shower and then went to bed.
Lying there, I replayed Ouyang Zhirou's words in my mind: "Zhao Lun! For them and for your beloved woman, it's time for a change. You can't be so weak anymore."
As these thoughts swirled in my head, my eyelids grew heavy, and eventually, I succumbed to sleep.
In the middle of the night, I felt completely immobilized—my arms and legs were unresponsive and devoid of sensation. My chest felt heavy as if something was pressing down on me, causing me pain.
When I opened my eyes, I found all three girls sprawled over me: Ouyang Zhirou on my left, Lin Mu Xi on my right, and Hua Yu Yan resting on my chest. They looked so peaceful in their sleep that I couldn't bring myself to push them away or wake them up. Instead, I gritted my teeth and lay there like a log, completely still.
This continued until the next morning when my limbs felt as if they had been broken; I could hardly feel them at all. Dark circles hung under my eyes, yet they still hadn’t woken up—this torment persisted.
Ding dong.
As the doorbell rang, I immediately woke them up. Who is this Liangshan Hero, this Savior, who is rescuing me from my troubles?
"Stay asleep, I'll go see who it is," I said.
But they didn’t even glance my way; they just turned over and continued sleeping. My limbs were still sluggish, and before I could gather myself, the doorbell rang again.
"Hey! Even if you are a Savior, you shouldn't be ringing the doorbell like this!"
As I slowly regained my composure, the doorbell kept ringing, louder and more frequently, eventually waking all three of them.
"Who is it? It's so early for doorbells! Zhao Lun, go check it out; I still want to sleep!"
My anger flared up. A Savior? What a joke! Today, I was ready to turn my back on anyone. With my limbs finally feeling normal, I stormed to the door.
"Who is it?! Did you eat something bad this morning? Ringing the doorbell like that, do you know you're disturbing people's rest?"
