"Uncle Zhao, you were really impressive just now!" Hu Yao gave Old Zhao a thumbs up, showering him with praise.
I couldn't help but wonder if there was some unspoken connection between these two. They had hardly met a few times, after all.
Haha, I guess I'm getting old. Who doesn't enjoy a compliment? Old Zhao's ears were soft; hearing such words could easily make him float on air. But I have to admit, Old Zhao's approach was quite effective.
Instead of opting for a direct confrontation, he used a strategy of softening the opponent's defenses before striking hard, completely shattering their psychological barriers. A seasoned player knows the game well; there's plenty for me to learn from him.
"Did you come alone, Old Zhao?"
"Alone? There are dozens of people waiting for me outside!"
I knew it! With something like this happening, how could Old Zhao possibly come alone? It turned out the others hadn't entered yet.
"You two don't need to attend class anymore today. Let me take you out for a nice meal," Old Zhao said to us in a calm tone, as if the earlier incident was merely trivial.
A nice meal? Of course, I gladly accepted. Who cares whose treat it is when Old Zhao is paying?
As we walked out of the teaching building, I finally spotted Lin Mu Xi—the figure I had been searching for all day.
"Old Zhao, Hu Yao, you two go ahead. I have something to take care of," I said, shaking them off and heading straight for Lin Mu Xi.
It wasn't until I had run quite a distance that Old Zhao finally turned to Hu Yao and said, "You should pay more attention in the future. I have a feeling something big is about to happen."
"Got it, Old Zhao. I'll go check it out," Hu Yao nodded and ran off in the direction I had just taken.
"Lin Mu Xi, wait! I need to talk to you!"
Hearing my shout, Lin Mu Xi turned around and looked at me with a grin. "Isn't this our school's Ling Kong Chao She General?"
My face instantly darkened. Why bring that up now? I had just gotten into a fight over that very issue, and here she was teasing me about it.
Seeing my expression change, she stopped joking. "Alright, just kidding. What do you want to talk about?"
"What do I want to talk about? Aren't you the one who wanted to say something to me that made me come find you?"
She laughed lightly. "Come on! When does a girl ever initiate contact with a guy? If I hadn't done this, how would you have come looking for me?"
"Damn it! What’s wrong with all the women in this world? One after another, they’re all like this."
I had no choice but to bow and scrape, trying to extract information from Wang Ju'en about her true intentions.
"Hey? Lin Mu Xi! What are you doing?" Zhao Lun exclaimed.
Hu Yao looked at me in disbelief, unable to fathom that I was speaking so calmly with Lin Mu Xi.
"Old Hu, just leave this matter alone for now. I have something important to discuss."
"No way! We’re brothers. If this woman tries to drug you, I can at least help you out."
Hearing this, Lin Mu Xi smirked slightly and said, "Hu Yao, do you really see me as that kind of person?"
"Not really—no, wait! Yes and no!" Hu Yao hurriedly shook his head but then suddenly nodded.
"What’s wrong with you?"
Watching the two of them go back and forth—one was my good buddy, and the other was someone I couldn’t refuse—I found myself without options.
"Alright, Old Hu, let’s stop here. Lin Mu Xi, shall we find a place to talk?"
I glanced at Hu Yao; he was determined to follow me, and it would be difficult to send him away.
I added reassuringly that he could sit there, but if he said a word, I would kick him out.
Having said that, Lin Mu Xi had no reason to refuse since she indeed had matters to discuss with me.
After a brief moment of hesitation, Lin Mu Xi followed us out of the school gate.
As I stepped outside, I saw dozens of cars lined up at the entrance. My face nearly turned pale. "Old Zhao, do you want to see what kind of spectacle you've created? It’s already a miracle no one reported it; why are they still parked here?"
After chatting with Old Zhao for a while, I signaled for him to leave first. We weren’t going out for a meal anymore. Sharp-eyed Old Zhao immediately spotted Lin Mu Xi behind us.
Once he got out of the car, he waved at her. "Hey there, young lady! Come here for a moment."
At first, Lin Mu Xi didn’t seem to notice. She looked around and realized she was the only girl at the entrance. "Uncle, are you calling me?"
"Yes, that’s right. Come over here."
"What are you up to?" Upon hearing Old Zhao call Lin Mu Xi over, an uneasy feeling crept into my heart.
With a slap, Old Zhao raised his hand and hit me on the head. "You little rascal! How do you speak? I’m your father; do you think I’d harm you?"
"Hello, Zhao Uncle!"
Lin Mu Xi faced Old Zhao’s imposing presence without any fear; instead, she was polite and composed.
"Oh? How do you know me? This is my first time appearing at Zhao Lun's school."
"If I told you I can tell fortunes? From the moment I met Zhao Uncle, I knew your identity."
Zhao Changsheng burst into laughter upon hearing this. "What an interesting young lady! It’s been a while since I've encountered someone like you. You all go have fun; at my age, I can’t keep up with your youthful activities. If Zhao Lun bullies you, just let me know; I'll take care of him."
With that, Old Zhao turned and got back into his car. He handed me a bottle of water just as I reached out to take it. His mouth opened slightly as he whispered in a tone only we could hear: "This little girl is not simple; be careful."
Then he shoved the water into my hands and said to Lin Mu Xi and Hu Yao, "You two have fun; I'm leaving now."
"Goodbye, Zhao Uncle!"
As one car after another drove away from in front of me, I remained in a daze.
"Old Zhao, what does that mean? Is Lin Mu Xi not simple? Could there be a twist? How did he know? Just based on these two sentences?"
"Hey, Zhao Xue, what are you standing there for? Can't bear to see your father leave?"
Hearing Lin Mu Xi speaking to me snapped me back to reality.
"Nothing's wrong, let's go find a restaurant and talk while we eat."
After the car drove away, Zhao Changsheng immediately started talking to Ke Hong.
"Wife, this girl named Lin Mu Xi is not simple. Her demeanor is just like when I first met my father-in-law."
"Oh? I've never heard of a girl being praised by you like this. What did you notice?"
"A girl around twenty years old, in front of dozens of people, she was too calm. Either she already knew my true identity, or Wang Shang's side gave her family enough benefits."
On the other end of the phone, Ke Hong was silent for a while before responding, "I think what you said makes some sense, but it seems you've strayed off course. It's not that Wang Shang gave them any benefits; it might be that they informed her of our weaknesses. And most importantly, if they really revealed our weaknesses, then that person absolutely cannot be Wang Shang. It could be Mo Li or even Su Xuan!"
Hearing this, Old Zhao suddenly understood. Right! Wang Shang never interferes in their disputes; as long as they don't stop him from making money, he doesn't care about anything else. His appearance at that meeting was entirely due to an order from Su Xuan.
Thoughts from his youth surged back like a tidal wave.
Over the years, aside from Ouyang Xiong who openly clashed with him the most, it was Mo Li who had been the biggest thorn in his side!
Mo Li loved to stab people in the back. For so many years, aside from guarding against Su Xuan, he had to guard against Mo Li!
He would love nothing more than for Zhao Changsheng and Ouyang Xiong to fight to the death while he reaped the benefits. Zhao had already suffered a significant loss at his hands once when he was young; that loss nearly cost both Ke Hong and himself their lives.
It wasn't that Zhao Changsheng feared him; it was just that this guy hid his residence too well. Besides Su Xuan, no one knew where he lived. If he wanted revenge, there was no way to do it. The only option would be to target his assets, but those were all interconnected. If one dared to act on them, it would be like throwing meat buns to dogs—there would be no return!
"Alright, I have a plan. I'll discuss it when I get back."
