Before long, I arrived at the barbecue restaurant, where Hu Yao spotted me immediately and waved from the entrance.
"Why did you take so long? You can't keep Hu Ge waiting. You're paying for this meal!"
Seeing Hu Yao's playful demeanor lightened my mood considerably. "Come on, when have I ever skimped on your meals?"
This place was one I frequented with Hu Yao, so when I presented their membership card, we easily bypassed the queue and headed straight to the second floor.
As soon as we sat down, Hu Yao waved the menu at the waiter, saying, "This one, this one, and this one. Don't bring anything else."
The waiter knew that since they were in a private room on the second floor, these two must have spent over ten thousand at this restaurant to get their card. Even so, the menu had nearly a hundred items. Would they really be able to finish all that?
"Excuse me, sir," she said politely. "I see it's just the two of you. Are you sure you can finish all this food?"
Hu Yao grinned and patted his chest confidently. "Don't worry! I have plenty of people at home who can help me finish it. I'll just take the leftovers with me; I hate wasting food."
Hearing this, the waiter couldn't say anything more and simply nodded with a smile before leaving.
Watching Hu Yao act like this made me roll my eyes. "You little rascal! You won't be satisfied until you've treated me to a feast, will you?"
Hu Yao waggled a finger in front of me. "Comrade Xiao Zhao! Your awareness needs improvement! What do you mean by treating you? I'm here to keep you company! I've put in effort, brainpower, and endurance; it's only right that you contribute too!"
I chuckled at his antics. "You may not be great at academics, but your words are surprisingly eloquent."
While waiting for our food, I recounted everything that had happened earlier. He didn't react much until I mentioned being blocked on my way here by a burly middle-aged man who insisted I play a few rounds of chess with him. At that point, he nearly flipped the table in shock.
"What?! What did you say? He had dozens of people block you just to play a few games of chess?"
His outburst drew attention from those around us. I felt embarrassed enough to want to dig my toes into the ground and turned to apologize to everyone nearby before pushing Hu Yao back into his seat. "What’s with you? Why are you so worked up? It wasn’t even you who got blocked!"
Hu Yao glanced around with a glint of concern in his eyes before whispering to me, "Is that true? Dozens of people blocking you, and you managed to get out unscathed?"
"If you put it that way," I replied, "I find it strange too. There were dozens of them there, but he only made me play two games before letting me go. Talk about someone who's bored out of their mind!"
As we chatted, our food started arriving steadily. We went from complaining about Old Zhao's comments to drinking some beer and boasting about our lives.
"I'm telling you," I said dramatically, "if I had superpowers, I'd definitely take that dog principal down a peg! Why should we have morning reading sessions just because he says so? Don't high school students have lives?"
"Exactly! If I had superpowers," Hu Yao chimed in enthusiastically, "I'd make that girl's parents forget everything! That way I'd be free!"
We exchanged glances and burst into laughter together, clinking our glasses for another round.
However, in the midst of our eating and drinking, Hu Yao suddenly froze, his eyes fixed intently behind me. Following his gaze, I noticed several couples behind us chatting and laughing—some even cuddling affectionately. It was nothing unusual; as I turned back to call out to him, he unexpectedly blurted out something shocking that snapped me back to reality more effectively than any hangover remedy could.
Sigh, suddenly I find myself missing someone else's girlfriend, gentle and refined, with a tenderness like flowing water.
"That's not right, man! It’s easy to say that when you’re looking at other people's couples!"
I immediately stood up, shoving a chicken wing into his mouth while glaring at him. "What the hell are you saying? How can you even say something like that? With all that food, can’t you keep your mouth shut for once?"
After the commotion with Hu Yao, I really lost my appetite. I was afraid this idiot would say something outrageous again. After settling the bill, we each went our separate ways.
I first helped the swaying Hu Yao into a car before I hailed one to go home. As I was leaving, that guy didn’t forget to check if he had missed any of the food he packed.
After the car had driven a short distance, Hu Yao suddenly sat up straight and said to the driver, "Master, please turn around and head to Zhao's Building Materials Group."
