At the end of the year, as the COVID-19 pandemic ravaged the nation, it was destined to be an extraordinary beginning. Many people's quality of life had changed, and some would never return to their previous state; others faced unemployment and loan suspensions.
As the Spring Festival approached, support for Wuhan began to roll in from across the country, with professional medical teams, military units, and various Civilian Rescue Teams mobilizing to help. Observing these scenes, the chat group for our team erupted in a flurry of discussions. Although everyone felt a surge of enthusiasm and impulse to actively participate, some harsh and unavoidable realities poured cold water on their courage and confidence.
The foremost issue was the scarcity of Medical Supplies. At that time, the entire country's medical resources were under extreme strain, and we were merely a grassroots organization. Securing a sufficient and stable supply of Medical Supplies was nearly impossible. After all, in this life-and-death struggle against the virus, protective gear, medications, and various medical instruments were essential weapons; without them, it was akin to sending soldiers into battle unarmed.
Moreover, there was an even more daunting problem: all team members had received systematic and professional training in infectious disease treatment. This meant that once they ventured into the frontline of epidemic control, any misstep could lead to infection, potentially bringing the virus back home to innocent family members. How would they face grieving relatives then? How could they explain it to society? With these thoughts in mind, even those who had been eager to participate began to hesitate.
Even if they could gain understanding and tolerance from others, a series of troubling questions awaited resolution: if someone were infected, who would bear the enormous Medical Expenses that followed? Before this point, no one knew how much funding would be required to treat this New Type of Disease or whether it would leave behind difficult-to-treat aftereffects. Furthermore, at that time, the government had yet to implement clear policies on Medical Expenses reduction, casting a shadow over everyone involved.
Faced with these daunting issues looming like roadblocks ahead, the once-vibrant chat group fell into silence as if time had frozen. Each person's face reflected confusion and uncertainty, their hearts filled with mixed emotions as they struggled to find direction.
As the pandemic spread, regions began implementing strict prevention measures, and people gradually entered a state of home quarantine. This decision not only affected the daily lives of ordinary citizens but also had a tremendous impact on the social economy. Almost all organizations responded by extending holidays and actively promoting remote work to reduce gatherings and the risk of cross-infection.
During this time, the situation regarding epidemic control became increasingly severe across various regions. New cases continued to rise; medical resources were strained; protective supplies were in short supply; these issues followed one after another. In light of such a challenging situation, after thorough discussion and communication, we reached a consensus: we decided to stay local and launch support actions.
First and foremost, we focused on medical assistance. We quickly organized an Emergency Rescue Team for Epidemic Response and provided intensive training to enhance their ability to handle sudden situations.
Secondly, logistical support was also crucial. We sought out masks, protective suits, goggles—essential Protective Equipment—along with food and drinking water through various channels.
Additionally, defining our operational scope was key in this support action. We rationally divided areas based on actual conditions and established detailed work plans and processes so that every participant clearly understood their responsibilities, thereby improving work efficiency and collaborative capabilities. As the saying goes: "Planning thoroughly leads to victory from afar." Only with sufficient preparation and planning could we achieve success in this war without gunpowder.
This decision quickly garnered everyone's response and support; those who could contributed financially or physically. Even if they couldn't go to Wuhan, at least they could lend a hand in their hometowns. Within days, we had prepared our first batch of medical supplies and logistical resources sufficient for nearly half a month’s use. The work plan was also set out primarily focusing on disinfection in Public Places, stationed personnel at key points, Nucleic Acid Testing, Zhui Yang operations among others. We continued refining our plans and recruiting additional supplies.
With anxious hearts, we slowly began recruiting personnel since this action faced numerous difficulties and challenges. I worried that people might hesitate due to family responsibilities or the high risk of infection posed by participating in recruitment efforts. However, reality exceeded our expectations! The final outcome was surprisingly smooth; within just one day, we successfully recruited numerous enthusiastic and courageous team members. Moreover, this number continued to grow as more like-minded individuals joined our expanding team.
Just as we were thrilled by such efficient recruitment results, an unexpected surprise arrived: community streets learned through some channels about our preparations for material support in the fight against the epidemic and proactively contacted us. Thus began our first arduous yet honorable mission—a task that suddenly appeared before us like a flash of lightning—filling everyone with excitement and tension.
This mission was no small feat! We were tasked with disinfecting public areas in a building suspected of housing COVID-19 patients. Upon hearing this news, everyone gasped: this was intense! Who would have thought our first mission would involve confronting the virus head-on?
At that moment, our captain solemnly asked who should carry out this daunting task. Silence fell over the room as everyone pondered their options. Without having time to think it through myself, my body seemed driven by instinct as I reflexively blurted out: "Let the party members and Veterans go first!" As soon as I said it, I was surprised even myself; yet it felt as if those words had emerged naturally from deep within me.
Once this suggestion was made, it quickly gained unanimous support from everyone present. Thus began an intense selection process where everyone scrutinized those eager volunteers based on their abilities and qualities. As a former soldier who had served my country as a Veteran, I naturally became one of those considered for selection—and ultimately made it through successfully. After layers of selection processes were completed, twelve elite members emerged from the group. Next came team assignments; I led one group while another was commanded by experienced veteran Wang. Each group consisted of skilled members who collaborated effectively while complementing each other's strengths.
However, this was a particularly sensitive time—a moment when even stepping outside one's door felt perilous enough for people to instinctively hold their breath in fear. Nevertheless, despite these challenges ahead of us, we remained undeterred and resolutely embarked on our mission.
