On that sweltering summer night, the stifling air enveloped the entire city, as if it could melt everything away. I was sitting in the office, idly flipping through some documents when suddenly, a sharp ring of the phone shattered the tranquility.
I picked up the phone, and a slightly anxious voice came through: "Hello, is this the rescue team? My kitten accidentally fell into a hole near the suburbs and can’t climb out. Could you please help us?" At first, I was taken aback, pondering to myself: we usually handle urgent situations involving people; this was the first time we were called to rescue a cat.
However, after a moment of thought, I realized that life is precious whether it belongs to a human or an animal. Since she was so desperate for help, it must have been a last resort for her. Coupled with an irresistible curiosity, I ultimately decided to take my team out to assist this anxious young woman.
As I hurried to the scene, the first thing that caught my eye was a relatively open area of land. It resembled a vast green carpet, quietly spread across the earth, so spacious and serene that one could almost hear the gentle whisper of the breeze brushing against the grass. There were no towering buildings or obstructions to block the view, making the entire space feel exceptionally expansive and transparent.
As my gaze wandered, I suddenly spotted an inconspicuous little hole just a few meters away from a dense thicket. The hole appeared ordinary; if not observed closely, it could easily be overlooked. Yet at that moment, it seemed to emit a mysterious allure that drew me closer for a better look.
The hole resembled an abandoned well but differed significantly from any well I had seen before. Its opening was not a regular circle but rather an irregular shape that made it difficult to gauge its true depth. Cautiously approaching the edge, I peered inside. The interior was remarkably dry, with some dried yellow weeds scattered at the bottom. Roughly estimating, this well was about several meters deep and widened as it descended, forming a shape that was narrow at the top and broader below.
At that moment, a young girl standing anxiously nearby approached me. She was indeed the owner of the trapped kitten. According to her account, she had been searching for her beloved cat for most of the day and had finally discovered its whereabouts in this secluded corner. However, despite trying various methods to rescue her kitten, she had been unsuccessful and had no choice but to seek our help.
After a thorough and tense on-site investigation and discussion among us, we reached a consensus: we would first prepare a cage intended for transporting cats and securely attach a sturdy rope to its top before slowly lowering this device into the seemingly bottomless pit to initiate the rescue operation.
As seconds ticked by, we carefully controlled the rope, inching the cage closer to the dark depths of the hole. However, it was disheartening that despite being so close by, the poor kitten seemed terrified of this approaching giant object and refused to enter the cage no matter what we did.
Faced with this situation, we did not give up easily. Someone suggested pulling the cage back up to ground level and placing some delicious cat food inside along with other suitable treats in hopes of enticing the kitten into the cage so we could complete our rescue mission.
Yet even with such painstaking efforts, that extremely frightened little cat remained unmoved. Perhaps it was still traumatized from its recent ordeal; or maybe it instinctively resisted unfamiliar environments and human presence. Regardless of how hard we tried to lure it in with food, this stubborn little creature adamantly refused to enter what seemed like a safe haven.
Confronted with such a challenging situation and lacking better alternatives, we had no choice but to readjust our original plan. After intense discussions, we ultimately made a difficult decision: we would send someone down into the hole for the rescue operation. Everyone understood that this approach would entail numerous unpredictable risks; however, when all eyes focused on that poor little life below, an innate sense of kindness and compassion ignited within each of us, prompting everyone to agree to take on this risk.
Fortunately, there were enough personnel at the scene to provide some level of support for this rescue mission. However, one major issue was that the opening of the hole was exceedingly narrow—only allowing one person’s body to pass through for operations. This undoubtedly added significant difficulty and challenge to our entire rescue plan. After considering all team members' abilities, experiences, and physical conditions comprehensively, we finally selected a teammate with extensive rope-handling experience for this crucial task.
He quickly donned his specially designed gear; every detail was meticulously adjusted to ensure everything was secure. Afterward, we conducted thorough checks on him—from ensuring his helmet fit securely to inspecting his safety rope for any damage—leaving no potential risk unexamined.
Once everything was ready and just waiting for the signal to start, we decided on entering headfirst into the cave due to its shape—narrow at top and wider below—providing enough space for one person’s movement as they descended.
Just before setting off, out of caution, I peered once more into the depths of the hole. Using my flashlight's strong beam, I carefully examined every corner and shadow to confirm there were no anomalies or potential dangers present. Once satisfied with my inspection, I turned back and nodded at my teammate indicating that we could begin.
He firmly held onto that small yet incredibly sturdy cat cage as we worked together slowly lowering him down along the rope. As he gradually approached the bottom of the hole, everyone’s hearts raced in anticipation as they watched intently below.
