After receiving the news, we initially thought our mission would end abruptly. However, the family members quickly informed us that the Public Security Bureau was seeking our assistance due to the lack of a team with the necessary recovery skills and experience at the scene. We felt it was our duty to agree.
As we entered the operation site, we noticed three or four police cars parked nearby, with around ten to twenty uniformed officers present, surrounded by a large crowd that was kept behind a security line.
At the scene was an Assault Boat that had come to participate in the rescue mission. Including the one we brought, there were two Assault Boats available for use. We quickly gathered together to discuss and formulate a detailed recovery plan. After thorough communication with the police personnel responsible for water operations, we set off from the riverbank in our Assault Boat.
Based on the information we had gathered and further observations at the scene, we determined that the approximate location of the victim was about a certain distance from the shore in a Water Rescue area. Fortunately, the water flow in that region was relatively gentle, which wouldn’t pose too much resistance to our rescue efforts; however, it was unfortunate that it happened to be a whirlpool area. This meant that despite the slower current, factors like eddies would still present challenges for our recovery operation.
From the comprehensive introduction provided by the police regarding the incident and our initial assessments, it became clear that the actual situation closely matched our initial expectations. Thus, based on various clues, it was highly likely that the drowning victim would appear in this location.
Having accumulated considerable experience in recovery operations, I felt quite familiar with the overall process for this mission. From preparing tools to executing underwater operations, each step was etched clearly in my mind. However, I was well aware that unpredictable situations often arose during underwater work; after all, the underwater world is filled with unknowns and variables. Therefore, even with my familiarity with the entire process, completing the mission often relied on a bit of luck.
Fortunately, it seemed that fate favored us this time; the entire recovery process went unexpectedly smoothly. Before long, we had brought the victim to the surface. As the body gradually approached the boat, it became strikingly visible against the dark background due to our use of a Strong Flashlight and various light reflections from the water surface and surrounding environment. A Female Team Member responsible for receiving at the boat suddenly caught sight of this scene and gasped in shock, nearly letting out a scream. She quickly covered her mouth with her hand, struggling to suppress her fear and astonishment.
Suddenly, an unusual atmosphere enveloped us as if tranquility had been shattered. The once calm lake surface began to ripple slightly, followed by distant sounds of commotion from the shore. Initially faint, these sounds grew clearer over time. Upon closer listening, we could hear people anxiously making phone calls and heart-wrenching cries echoing through the air. This sudden turn of events caused my heart to race uncontrollably.
We tightly gripped the ropes in our hands, striving to control the boat carrying the body as we carefully maneuvered it slowly toward shore. Each movement felt incredibly arduous, as if bearing an immense weight. The body lay still on the water's surface, contrasting starkly with the surrounding chaos.
Finally, after considerable effort, we managed to pull the boat to shore. I took a deep breath to steady myself before gently lifting the body onto land and carefully handing it over to waiting police personnel. They swiftly accepted it with serious and solemn expressions before commencing further investigation work.
