Not long after the Spring Festival, it was the most critical season of the year. However, one morning during this season, I received a call from the Emergency Bureau. A large-scale landslide had occurred in a certain area of the city, causing the collapse of several buildings. Our team was put on standby and prepared to mobilize for support at any moment.
We immediately began an emergency recruitment of team members. In the storage room, I gathered everything that could be useful or that I could think of—shovels, hydraulic jacks, chainsaws, and more. Considering that we might be involved in long hours of work, I also brought out drinking water, medical supplies, and food.
As time passed, personnel gradually arrived at the designated location. Once everyone gathered, we quickly got to work, loading piles of supplies onto the vehicles. The supplies varied widely, including food, drinking water, medical supplies, and various emergency tools. Everyone worked together with a shared purpose, cooperating efficiently and busily.
After loading the supplies, we did not stop there; we proceeded to conduct a thorough inspection of the vehicles. We checked everything from tire wear to brake performance and engine operation to ensure that the vehicles could operate normally without any breakdowns on the road.
Moreover, we carefully checked the fuel levels. After all, during a mission, running low on fuel could cause significant problems for the entire operation. Therefore, we were meticulous about our fuel reserves.
After a round of intense labor, everyone finally had a chance to catch their breath and take a short break. During this interval, we began drafting preliminary plans and outlines. Since this particular area of work was unfamiliar to most of us and we had never truly engaged in similar tasks before, some experienced veteran team members who had participated in earthquake rescue operations shared valuable insights and suggestions based on their past experiences. Nonetheless, to ensure the scientific rigor and reliability of our plans, we decided to seek help from relevant professionals for guidance and support.
Next, we conducted further training on the use of some equipment and practical exercises for everyone. Once these tasks were completed, it felt no different from our usual routine; we just needed to remain nearby so that we could depart as quickly as possible once notified.
One well-known team member suggested gathering after lunch for a chat. Not long into our conversation, my phone rang. The higher-ups informed us that today would be dedicated to preparing all supplies and recruiting personnel; we were scheduled to depart with other teams tomorrow morning. After hanging up the phone, I quickly told everyone to rest up for an early morning assembly.
Dragging my exhausted body home while it was still early in the evening, I hurried through my evening routine and eagerly slipped into my warm bed. I thought I would quickly drift into sweet dreams; however, contrary to my expectations, no matter how much I tossed and turned, my mind remained alert and restless, making it difficult to fall asleep.
