Gradually, I began to pay more attention to the term "public welfare." In my understanding, it was merely about doing small tasks like cleaning up trash. However, after delving deeper, I discovered that it encompassed a much more profound community: the Public Welfare Rescue.
In my past experiences and reflections, I always believed that the brave and fearless figures charging into danger belonged to teams like the fire department. Yet, fate's gears turned quietly, and one day, an unexpected event occurred that completely overturned my long-held beliefs.
It was a chance opportunity that allowed me to participate in an event. There, I inadvertently met a member of a rescue team named Wang Yong. He appeared to be in his forties, exuding a calm and resolute aura. The people in his team affectionately called him Brother San, simply because he ranked third in age within the group. However, perhaps due to my admiration for his unique mature charm, I preferred to call him Lao Wang.
I had a strong interest in these rescue teams, so I took the initiative to strike up a conversation with him. At first, Lao Wang patiently shared with me the routine operations of the rescue team: how they remained vigilant at all times, ready to respond to various emergencies; how they quickly launched rescue missions in perilous environments; and so on. As our conversation deepened, he began to share some real-life experiences he had encountered. Each story was gripping, making me feel as if I were right there experiencing the tension and excitement.
As our dialogue progressed, we eventually touched upon the history of the Civilian Rescue Team. Coincidentally, when Lao Wang mentioned this history, I was astonished to realize that my long-held dream of joining the military coincided with the official inception of the Domestic Rescue Team! That significant day was on [specific date]. At that moment, an indescribable surge of excitement welled up within me, as if some unseen force was tightly connecting me to this great team.
Once home, I eagerly opened my computer and began searching online for various materials related to our earlier discussion. As I refreshed the pages, information flooded my screen like a tidal wave. Sure enough, everything Lao Wang had said was spot on!
Lying comfortably in bed, my mind was still restless. Thoughts raced through my head like wild horses galloping freely, filled with exhilarating possibilities. I tossed and turned in bed—lying on my side one moment and flat on my back the next—unable to find a comfortable position conducive to sleep. Time ticked by slowly as I remained in a half-awake state throughout the night.
Despite not sleeping a wink, my spirit was exceptionally high. Suddenly, it dawned on me that this might be the opportunity I had been desperately seeking; it fit so perfectly with my initial dream! If that were the case, why not extend and expand this dream further? This way, not only could I continue providing quality services to the public but also cleverly integrate the valuable experiences and skills I had accumulated during my time in the military.
With these thoughts racing through my mind, I could no longer contain my excitement. The next morning, just as dawn broke and the sky began to lighten, I hurriedly grabbed my phone and called Lao Wang without hesitation.
Sleepily answering the phone, Lao Wang asked groggily, "Who is this? It's too early for this."
I chuckled and replied, "It's me, Xiao Shuai! We talked yesterday."
"Oh! It's you! What’s up? Spit it out quickly."
I shared my ideas with him, and he immediately sat up in bed with his voice raised several notches. "Are you sure?"
I sincerely replied, "Absolutely." Thus we arranged a time to meet and discuss further.
After lunch, I arrived at our agreed meeting spot—a tea house by the river that offered a tranquil environment with an expansive view. Upon entering, I noticed he had already taken a seat by the window against the wall. He spotted me and waved eagerly. "Come on over! I've been waiting for you for ages!"
Dressed in dark athletic wear that made him look particularly energetic—his age completely indiscernible—he quickly got straight to the point once I sat down. "So you want to join the rescue team?"
