After a day of fierce battles, everyone felt somewhat exhausted, yet their hearts were filled with excitement. However, the real challenge lay ahead. Compared to the first day, the events of the second day were noticeably easier. Nevertheless, no one dared to let their guard down, as every detail was crucial.
Just before lights out, the Company Commander made a special visit to the dormitory to conduct an in-depth motivational talk with all of us. He spoke in a gentle yet firm tone, telling everyone that today they had demonstrated extraordinary strength and tenacity. Although tomorrow's tasks were relatively lighter, there could be no room for complacency. "Remember, we are a united and forward-moving team!" His words felt like a spring breeze brushing through everyone's hearts, greatly easing the tension caused by the high-pressure environment.
Under the encouragement and care of the Company Commander, the soldiers quickly relaxed and crawled into their beds early. With dreams of tomorrow's competition in their minds, they slowly drifted into a sweet slumber.
The first event of the second day was the Rice Barrier, which was known to be the most grueling challenge. There is a saying that goes, "Better to run 10 kilometers than to run 100 meters," and this Rice Barrier was precisely that. It was a high-intensity and high-difficulty event that required exceptional explosive power and physical coordination. While one could maintain a steady pace over long distances, that was not possible here.
Upon arriving at the obstacle course and warming up, the competition was about to begin. This was an event that could only be completed individually; once on the field, there would be no support—only one's own strength to rely on for struggle and sprinting. When the whistle blew, everyone shot off like arrows from bows; however, as the race progressed, their stamina began to wane. After completing the course, each person's face was etched with pain as if they had just survived a battle to the death. The once vibrant faces now appeared haggard, sweat streaming down their cheeks and soaking their clothes.
The heartbeat thudded like a drum within their chests, as if it might leap out at any moment. The discomfort from such intense exertion made it nearly impossible to breathe; yet despite this, everyone gritted their teeth and persevered. Fortunately, although the process was exceptionally arduous, everyone managed to achieve at least what they had trained for during practice sessions. At that moment, all fatigue and pain seemed to find some solace.
The final event was Military Geography—our strong suit! Our Company Commander had previously secured first place in Military Geography competitions across the entire military district. We often visited him for meals at his place. This time he was selected for this event and called me over to assist with logistics and equipment. I hurriedly followed behind him without knowing who had chosen this location; we crawled through several bushes and climbed several slopes before starting the competition on a slightly flat grassy area.
As soon as the referee signaled for time to start, I watched them pull out military maps and tools in a flurry of activity. I dared not speak and stood at a distance while our Company Commander observed like a supervisor, occasionally sneaking glances at them. One of the referees came over to chat with me idly; just as we were talking, our Company Commander reported back that they had finished—what speed! I glanced at him; he smiled back at me, and I thought we were safe now.
The judging team began reviewing on-site papers; our Company Commander also took a look and smiled before turning away. I was puzzled when suddenly the referee announced that our Company had secured first place! This news thrilled me as I rushed back to our Company to share the good news with everyone; everyone gave thumbs up in approval.
The two days of competition passed swiftly as if time had been hastily pushed forward by an invisible hand. Since our unit was the last to compete, we would immediately know our final results once all competitions concluded. At this moment, everyone gathered in the spacious courtyard, each heart filled with tension and anticipation as we anxiously awaited our Chief's announcement of results.
During the long and torturous wait, we speculated about our potential rankings in this competition. Most believed that given our performance so far, securing either first or third place should not be an issue. However, as our Chief clearly called out each Company name one by one, our hearts gradually sank—none of them were ours! An indescribable sense of disappointment enveloped us all like a heavy cloud pressing down on us.
Just when everyone was immersed in despair, suddenly our Chief's booming voice rang out again: "The first place in this competition goes to..." He paused slightly; it felt as if time itself froze as all eyes locked onto him. Then came those exhilarating three words: "It is you!" Instantly, the previously silent atmosphere shattered; cheers erupted like waves crashing ashore. Every face lit up with disbelief and ecstatic joy; no one could contain their elation any longer as they cheered wildly.
This first-place victory held profound significance for us—it represented a long-awaited honor. It had been many years since we last held this trophy aloft. Throughout those long years, we dedicated ourselves tirelessly to rigorous training day after day—countless mornings running toward the rising sun and countless nights sweating under starlight. Now, this hard work finally yielded its most perfect reward: the heavy trophy in our hands stood as irrefutable proof of our relentless efforts over so many days and nights.
Everyone embraced one another warmly, feeling each other's excited heartbeats. Some had tears welling up in their eyes from overwhelming emotion—tears filled with memories of hardships endured along this journey together. Indeed, only we could truly understand all its bittersweet nuances. But at this moment, all fatigue and suffering vanished; what remained was pure joy and unparalleled pride.
As the sunset cast its golden glow over the camp, everyone marched back to our Company with synchronized steps—carrying both exhaustion from training and newfound achievements. Meanwhile, the cooking team had already prepared a sumptuous dinner; delicious aromas wafted through the air making mouths water.
In the spacious cafeteria, everyone lined up orderly for their meals before gathering together to enjoy this delightful feast. Just as everyone was savoring their food with gusto, our Company Commander stepped forward—his posture tall and commanding yet warm-hearted. Clearing his throat brought immediate silence throughout the cafeteria; all eyes turned toward this respected leader.
"Comrades!" he said loudly with a strong voice full of conviction. "Today’s competition showcased your hard work and determination—I see you are all outstanding! However," he continued with emphasis, "I must remind you that while we have achieved some results today, we cannot become complacent or let our guard down." He paused for effect before continuing: "The road ahead is still long—filled with various challenges and difficulties requiring us to maintain humility and caution while moving forward step by step."
"Only by doing so can we continue progressing toward becoming a truly powerful team!"
The Company Commander's words blew through everyone's hearts like a refreshing breeze—instilling both motivation and awareness of responsibility within us all. Soldiers nodded in agreement; determination shone brightly in their eyes. Soon after that momentary silence returned with soft clinking sounds of bowls and chopsticks resuming amidst enjoyment of food while reflecting on our Commander's speech—each silently vowing not to disappoint his expectations but rather forge ahead boldly while bringing glory to our Company!
