The sound of her body leaving the water replaced the soft splashes of her lips, a bath towel draped over her as she hung onto the man. Qi Chong's movements were always gentle, as if he had been observing her, attuned to her feelings.
At the end, Yu Chunmiao didn’t let the man leave her; instead, she took the initiative to approach him. "Husband, the doctor said I can get pregnant now."
"Let’s wait another two years. You’re only sixteen; I can’t bear to rush you," he replied.
"I’m almost seventeen; I’m willing."
Qi Chong knew she was tired and didn’t want to trouble her further, so he held her close and they slept soundly until dawn.
"Yuan Qingmiao, when my brother comes, let him make you a swing. Do you prefer a round one or a long one?" Qi Rong's voice echoed from the yard.
Qi Yuan had gone on his honeymoon with Wu Shengnan, which was Yu Chunmiao's idea.
"Brother Qi Rong, Qian Duo Duo is so big; I’m scared of it." Yuan Qingmiao followed Qi Rong, and Qian Duo Duo shadowed them, making the little girl feel as if the dog was coming after her.
Qi Rong’s protective instincts flared. "Don’t be afraid; with me around, it won’t dare do anything to you. I’ll teach you how to tame it. Come on, let’s get some jerky."
Qi Rong was still growing; aside from the childishness in his face and his developing features, his eyebrows, eyes, and lips resembled Qi Chong’s. The little girl liked him so much that they quickly became good friends after just a short time playing together.
The two of them sat in the yard, rolling around and playing with the dog. Yuan Qingmiao clapped her hands in delight as if watching a circus act, thinking that he was much more impressive than Qi Chong on horseback.
Yu Chunmiao removed the heavy hand resting on his chest and stretched lazily before getting up.
"Why don’t you sleep a little longer?" Qi Chong managed to open his eyes with difficulty; riding all this way had left him sore and tired.
"I need to go to town to buy materials for my grandmother and earn some money."
The couple headed to town. Zeng Yulan rushed to take over the stove at noon and said, "My Yu Chunmiao loves my cooking the most! From now on, don’t treat me like a guest; this is what I’m used to doing."
She hadn’t anticipated that she would have another chance to cook for Yu Chunmiao, which made her eager to do so.
But Chen Ruolan didn’t know this and insisted, "How can I accept that? Even if I'm not a guest, it’s only my first day here; let me handle it."
Zeng Yulan pushed her out of the kitchen. "Come on! Either help me watch the fire or don’t interfere with my work."
In the end, Chen Ruolan stayed behind to tend to the fire.
For lunch, they had sweet potato in syrup, braised lion's head meatballs, and fried ribs that left everyone rubbing their bellies in satisfaction.
Pei Qingxuan’s opinion of Zeng Yulan changed significantly; he now thought that this woman was so proud because she had something valuable inside her.
Just like scholars, those who are more capable always carry a certain pride within them. Yu Chunmiao savored every bite of food, wearing an expression of sheer enjoyment. This flavor was something he dreamed of, and he thought to himself, Aunt, I am fulfilled.
Zeng Yulan teased him, "Fulfilled? You won't be truly fulfilled until you give Qi Chong a child."
There's no rush; Yu Chunmiao is still young. Chen Ruolan intervened, feeling that Zeng Yulan resembled a mother more than an aunt to Yu Chunmiao.
In the afternoon, Zeng Yulan washed ten pounds of cassava, the white powder drying in the courtyard, waiting to be sun-dried for another source of income.
The family sat in the yard basking in the sun when Lin Qiujiu rushed in.
"I told you they would come! Hurry and go check out Village East; Shi Daifu and Qi Ping An are fighting!"
Qi Chong lounged in a bamboo chair, tilting his head back and sighing with exasperation. Why couldn't he have a moment of peace?
Seeing Qi Chong's nonchalant demeanor, Lin Qiujiu hurried over to pull him up. "You've been gone for days; he's been causing trouble again. If we don't intervene now, someone might get hurt!"
