Neither of them wanted to argue, so they simply fell silent. Qi Chong held Yuan Qingmiao tightly in his arms, and the little girl felt completely safe, showing no fear at all. They had even taken a few runs together, enjoying the thrill of the moment.
Upon their swift return, the cold wind had left the little girl’s cheeks flushed. She excitedly shouted, "Mother, Brother-in-law is amazing! When I grow up, I want to marry someone just like him!"
"How shameless! You're still so young and already thinking about marriage?" Zeng Yulan teased her with a smirk, though there was no hint of reproach in her tone.
"There aren't many men like your Brother-in-law around," Yu Chunmiao joked. "There might still be one or two out there."
Qi Chong leaned on his waist and asked, "Who?"
With a sly smile, Yu Chunmiao replied, "A man like yours must surely come from your old Qi Family."
Hearing this, Qi Chong laughed heartily and turned to Yuan Qingmiao, saying, "There’s another one who looks like me. Do you want him?"
Yuan Qingmiao looked up at him. Though she didn’t quite understand how to describe it, she knew Qi Chong was referring to someone special. After a long pause, she said, "Just looking like you isn’t enough; he also has to be strong like Brother-in-law and able to ride a horse."
The adults burst into laughter at her earnestness. Yu Chunmiao chuckled and said, "It seems that aside from Qi Rong, you don’t fancy anyone else!"
As they chatted and laughed along the way for nine days, they finally arrived home.
Chen Ruolan had been anxiously waiting for their return; after nearly twenty days of absence, she was eager to see them back. When she saw a man, a woman, and a child accompanying them, she wondered if they had brought back an entire family.
"Mother, this is my dear Aunt; she took care of me when I was little," Yu Chunmiao quickly introduced them. "And this is my cousin, Yuan Qingmiao."
"Auntie has gone through hardships and cared for me when I was young; I wanted to bring her here to look after us," she added.
Upon hearing this, Chen Ruolan quickly took Zeng Yulan's hand and said, "Then that makes her our family now! From now on, we’re all one big family."
She turned to call into the inner courtyard, "Qi Rong! Come here quickly!"
Qi Rong was inside studying when he heard her call and rushed out.
Chen Ruolan pointed at Yuan Qingmiao and said, "This is your Sister-in-law's cousin. She’ll be living with us from now on. You two can figure out who’s older and who’s younger among yourselves; no bullying allowed, understand?"
Seeing the fair and adorable Yuan Qingmiao, Qi Rong had no intention of bullying her at all. He immediately took her hand and said, "Come on! Brother will take you to eat some treats; I have some meat jerky in my room."
He didn’t care about who was older or younger—after all, he would soon turn eleven and surely considered himself the elder.
Yuan Qingmiao glanced at Zeng Yulan for permission before following along.
"Such a child," Yu Chunmiao said to me all the way, her eyes glistening with tears as she spoke of you, Zeng Yulan. She is unfortunate, but meeting you all is truly a blessing for her.
"Where's the talk of being in-laws? Our family is blessed to have her," Chen Ruolan said as she pulled Yu Chunmiao inside, not waiting for her to introduce Pei Qingxuan.
When the Qi Family built their house, they ended up with an extra row of rooms. Among those rooms, there was a multifunctional bathhouse separating two bedrooms. Originally intended as guest rooms, they were now fully occupied.
After dinner, Yu Chunmiao began assigning rooms. "Aunt, you and Yuan Qingmiao will stay in the row with Qi Rong. Pei Gengjiao, you'll have a room to yourself."
Chen Ruolan was surprised. "What? Aren't you two a couple?"
Hearing this, Zeng Yulan immediately shook her head in disdain. "Sister, please don't say that! I haven't committed any sins in this life or the last."
Yu Chunmiao kicked her under the table to remind her not to be so sharp-tongued.
Pei Qingxuan, hearing this, was so angry she couldn't find the words. Was it really necessary to hold a grudge over just one argument about tea?
