As night fell, fine raindrops began to patter down from the roof, the sound of the rain growing louder. It seemed that someone, emboldened by the cover of darkness, had become daring.
Inside the room, as garments were shed, the woman's fair skin transformed into a delicate sheet of rice paper. The man took her as his canvas, using his hands to paint a landscape filled with mountains and rivers.
Once she was ready, he immersed himself in this painted world.
"Brother," she murmured softly.
The two words, as faint as a mosquito's buzz, pierced Qi Chong's ears. His blood suddenly froze, only to surge back with greater intensity. The heavy sensation in his body found its anchor, and the bone-deep itch became a scar from scratching.
Outside and inside, the rain seemed to have reached an unspoken agreement to pause.
Qi Chong traced the scratches on his back and let out a hiss.
Yu Chunmiao clutched the blanket tightly, revealing only her bright almond-shaped eyes. "Why are you pushing yourself so hard? I can't fall behind either."
Qi Chong pulled down her blanket and pecked her lips. "I’m not in pain; what about you?"
"You reckless man," she replied, shaking her head despite herself. The pain mingled with pleasure left her wanting more.
Qi Chong got up and put on his undergarments. Yu Chunmiao found it strange; he usually just wore shorts to bed but today he was dressing fully.
Noticing her confusion, Qi Chong explained, "I need to go out for a bit. You should sleep; don’t wait for me."
Yu Chunmiao sat up. "It's so late, and it just rained. What do you need to go out for?"
"To catch thieves!" he said as he laced up his boots.
He headed towards Qian Duo Duo and made his way into the mountains of West End Village. The traps had already been set; he wanted to see who would dare to steal his prey.
Finding a tree, he climbed up but was drenched by the water pooled on its branches. He extinguished his torch and settled into the tree while his dog lay alert beneath him.
As dusk approached, the dog let out a low growl of warning, prompting Qi Chong to signal for silence.
Before long, a figure began ascending the mountain. An hour later, that person was seen struggling back down with a hefty catch slung over their shoulders.
"Now!" Qi Chong commanded, and Qian Duo Duo sprang forth from its hiding place, barking fiercely at the intruder. The growls were filled with hostility, warning the man that one more step would lead to trouble.
"Get lost!" the man shouted in alarm as he halted in his tracks. "Go away or I’ll kill you!"
The barking turned into a low growl as the man tried to sneak past the dog, but Qian Duo Duo lunged at him, startling him back. After two or three attempts, he found he couldn't take another step forward.
"You're afraid of my dog and still dare to come steal?" A teasing voice came from the tree above.
Qi Chong? The man quickly dropped his prey and attempted to flee, but Qian Duo Duo wasn't playing games this time. She charged forward, biting at his pant leg and pulling him back forcefully. The man was so frightened that he kicked his legs repeatedly, tearing his pants as Qi Chong jumped down from the tree.
"Duo Duo, come back." The dog obeyed and released her grip, retreating to Qi Chong's side.
I wondered who it was that had come; it turned out to be He Guangping. He had expected that the one trying to steal would be one of the villagers who had participated in digging the traps, since they knew where they were located. However, upon further thought, he realized that if prey had appeared in the traps, it would have been easy for them to notice, and they likely wouldn't dare to approach.
