Chen Ruolan gently patted her face and said, "Child, you must have heard Qi Uncle. Thank you for making him happy today."
Soon, the family gathered around to burn paper money, and Wu Shengnan joined in. Yu Chunmiao thought to herself that she might be hoping to become a daughter-in-law of the Qi Family. However, now was not the time for such thoughts.
Once everything was settled, Chen Ruolan wanted to say a few words to her husband. Qi Chong slung his bow and arrow over his shoulder and said, "Qi Rong, Yu Chunmiao, stay here with Mother. Yuan Er, come with me into the woods to hunt for something."
"Hunting? I want to go too!" Wu Shengnan exclaimed excitedly.
Qi Chong glanced at her but did not respond, heading straight into the woods while calling for Qian Duo Duo. Qian Duo Duo obediently followed Qi Chong's side as if she had a mission.
Not long after entering the woods, Qi Chong spotted a foraging wild chicken. He raised his arm behind him and gestured for everyone to crouch down. Qian Duo Duo mimicked him and lay flat as well.
Qi Chong drew his arrow with a smooth yet deliberate motion. Once he had it strung, he decisively released the arrow, and the wild chicken fell before it could escape.
Qian Duo Duo was already poised and dashed forward to retrieve the chicken.
Wu Shengnan excitedly said, "Your archery skills are amazing—"
Before she could finish her sentence, Qi Yuan covered her mouth.
Qi Yuan signaled for her to be quiet and pointed at a nearby rustling bush, whispering, "There’s more; don’t scare them away."
Wu Shengnan looked up just in time to see Qi Chong stringing another arrow and slowly standing up. As he released it, Qian Duo Duo immediately dashed after the arrow.
When she returned, she had a rabbit in her mouth.
The group continued searching for more game when Wu Shengnan quietly asked Qi Yuan, "Your older brother is impressive; can you hunt as well?"
Qi Yuan replied with disappointment, "I can, but my brother doesn’t allow me."
"Why not?"
"My father died while hunting, and my skills aren’t as good as my brother’s. If I go into the mountains alone, he would beat me."
As they spoke, Qian Duo Duo returned with another mountain chicken in her mouth. Time was running out; Qi Yuan gathered their catch while the three of them and the dog prepared to head back.
Unexpectedly, a mountain chicken was startled and flew up. Qi Chong quickly drew an arrow, aimed, and with a whoosh, the mountain chicken fell to the ground.
Qian Duo Duo, already familiar with the game, reached the spot just as the chicken landed. She thought this game was incredibly fun; it was simply exhilarating.
Wu Shengnan clapped her hands in admiration. "Your archery skills are even better than my brother's."
Qi Yuan asked her, "Your brother hunts too?"
Mentioning her brother made Wu Shengnan proud. "My brother is a Cavalry General; he’s known as the Divine Archer in the army, a true Strongman."
She couldn't help but think of her poor brother, who hadn’t completed his mission to find someone and had ended up as Xiao Wei. If he couldn’t find that person soon, he would be drafted as a soldier.
Upon hearing this, Qi Chong thought of Wu Dayong and glanced at Wu Shengnan, forming a suspicion in his mind.
Yu Chunmiao looked at the prey in Qi Yuan's hands and excitedly said, "We’ll have chicken soup for lunch! But this rabbit needs to be skinned; I don’t want to eat it."
Qi Chong replied nonchalantly, "Qian Duo Duo is a hunter; she’ll prepare it for dinner. As for the rabbit..."
He tossed the rabbit into a dilapidated temple as they passed by.
The chicken soup for lunch was delicious, and Wu Shengnan had two large bowls. However, when she heard that she would be sent to the town in the afternoon, she appeared dejected.
Yu Chunmiao comforted her, saying, "It’s not like we won’t see each other again. You live in the county; we’ll visit often. Just make sure you don’t run away from home again."
Wu Shengnan cheerfully revealed her home address: "I live on Ancient Mulberry Alley at South Bridge Street in Qingstone County. The house with a well in front is mine."
