The gavel struck again, but this time it was different; the whole family had to participate because they were electing a village chief. Chen Ruolan hesitated for a long time between a new hairpin and an old one, until Yu Chunmiao directly pinned the new one into her hair.
"Mother, we can't hide our wealth anymore. That troublemaker, Zhang Guihua, has calmed down; there's nothing to be afraid of. It's not like we stole or robbed anything. My mother is so beautiful; what's wrong with wearing a hairpin?"
Chen Ruolan supported her hairdo and looked into the mirror, her eyes reddening. Reflected in the mirror was herself and her husband. Qian Duo Duo stayed behind to watch the house while Qi Yuan took two long benches, and the family set off.
Also attending the election was the town clerk from a nearby town. He wouldn't participate in the election but would report the results back. Under the great Banyan Tree, two tables were set up where the village chief and the town clerk sat, waiting for everyone to gather.
Even though the town clerk held a minor position, he stood up first to say some formal words. This year, Beishan Village had paid all its head taxes, and Gao Village Head deserved much of the credit. Gao Changfa lowered his head slightly.
Now, the triannual election was about to begin. If no one had objections, Gao Village Head would be re-elected as chief of Beishan Village.
"I have an objection!" Villager Zheng Weiqiang stood up. "We have other candidates."
Gao Changfa's expression darkened as he shot a glance at Zheng Weiqiang, as if to say, "I’ll remember you."
"Yes, we also have other candidates."
The chaotic voices of dissent prompted Gao Changfa to instinctively light his dry tobacco. The town clerk waved his hand for silence: "If that's the case, then state who you want to elect."
"Qi Chong!"
"Qi Chong!"
"Gao Changfa!"
"Qi Chong!"
"Qi Chong!"
In the end, Qi Chong's name overshadowed Gao Changfa. People turned their gazes toward him. Qi Chong was momentarily taken aback, waiting expressionlessly for the situation to unfold. Yu Chunmiao gently tugged at Qi Chong's sleeve and asked, "Do you want to be the village chief?"
Qi Chong shook his head in silence; he didn't even want to deal with these people, let alone be their chief. The Town Clerk asked everyone to raise their hands for a vote, and it turned out that the majority indeed favored Qi Chong.
Clearing his throat, he announced, "Then for this election of the village chief in Beishan Village, the result is Qi Chong."
At that moment, Qi Chong stood up and said, "I don't want to be the village chief; you can let whoever you like take the position."
The Town Clerk was surprised that the villagers' choice for chief was such a young and handsome fellow. He asked, "Why don't you want to? Are you afraid of lacking experience and not being able to handle the village's affairs?"
Villagers often clashed over various issues, and the village chief needed to step in to make decisions to prevent matters from escalating and causing trouble at the Yamen. Otherwise, it would turn into complete chaos.
Qi Chong remained expressionless as he replied, "Yes, I am young and impulsive when faced with situations. Just ask He Guangping; hasn't he been beaten by me enough times?"
After saying this, he sat back down, appearing indifferent to the whole matter. The crowd glanced at He Guangping huddled in the corner; he hadn't even brought a stool and squatted far away, seeming utterly insignificant.
