As Yu Chunmiao reached for a hairpin, Qi Chong quickly pulled her back. He pointed to a pair of red begonia hairpins on the counter and said, "You don't even style your hair into a bun; these begonia hairpins would look perfect in your braids."
Before anyone could ask, the shopkeeper immediately took out the hairpins and introduced them. "These are Pingti Begonias, designed to be worn in pairs, perfect for a young lady like you with two braids. They’re not made of gold or silver, just three hundred wen."
Qi Chong asked him, "Do you have any made of gold or silver?"
The shopkeeper was taken aback. This couple clearly looked like they were from the countryside; just moments ago, they had haggled over two taels of silver, and now they were acting quite extravagant. But what if they could afford it?
"Yes, we do have silver ones," he replied, "but it's just a single begonia."
Yu Chunmiao felt that the meaning behind the gift was more important than its price, so she insisted on getting the pair. The shopkeeper hurriedly packed them into a box while Qi Chong paid.
Just as Qi Chong was settling the payment, a couple entered—a middle-aged man and a much younger woman. The husband appeared to be in his fifties, his face glowing with prosperity, while his wife looked to be around seventeen or eighteen, dressed elegantly with an abundance of gold and silver hairpins adorning her head. A pair of jade earrings hung heavily from her earlobes.
Yu Chunmiao glanced over and recognized her immediately. "Isn't that Zhou Min? And next to her is Liu Laoye."
Zhou Min was dressed flamboyantly, linking her arm through Liu Laoye's as she spoke in a coy voice. "My dear husband, I've had my eye on that gold bracelet for quite some time now, but the lady keeps saying I shouldn't waste money on it. Today you must buy it for me; otherwise, you'll have to sleep with her tonight."
Liu Laoye patted her hand affectionately, his eyes filled with indulgence. "Of course, darling! Whatever you want, I'll buy for you. Just don’t push me out of the room!"
Zhou Min blushed with a smile and happened to catch sight of Yu Chunmiao standing there. She paused slightly but quickly pretended not to recognize her.
Liu Laoye glanced at Yu Chunmiao but was soon brought back to Zhou Min's charm.
Yu Chunmiao thought to herself that Zhou Min had indeed found her comfort zone in this race of life.
When Qi Chong finished paying and noticed them as well, he remained indifferent, his heart showing no signs of disturbance.
The two then climbed onto their donkey cart and headed home.
Yu Chunmiao playfully teased Qi Chong along the way. "In the race between the tortoise and the hare, with a pig as the referee, who do you think won?"
"Um... the hare?"
"You are the judge, and you have the final say," Yu Chunmiao said.
"What can be long or short? After getting married, a wife can, but if you insist before marriage, it will only make people laugh," Qi replied.
Yu Chunmiao chuckled, almost losing her straw hat in the process. "What are you thinking? It's your surname we're talking about. Some people have single surnames, while others have compound ones. Isn't that what it means to be long or short?"
"I'll be your Qi Niangzi when I marry you, haha!"
Qi Chong blushed and laughed along with her. His laughter was always so restrained, just a slight smile without showing his teeth. He didn't often laugh unless he couldn't help it. At that moment, as he tried to suppress his smile, he radiated happiness and sweetness.
Once they got home, Qian Duo Duo jumped onto Yu Chunmiao, transforming into a little monster.
Yu Chunmiao patted his head between his airplane ears and spoke in a rare playful tone, "Good Duo Duo, you missed me, right? Look, Mama is just fine. Don't worry."
The Qi family paused for a moment, rushing to play the role of dog parents seemed a bit excessive.
Chen Ruolan looked at Qi Chong as if to suggest, "Why don't you two have one of your own?"
Qi Yuan approached with a spoon still in hand and added, "The folks from Xian Ke Lai have been talking about your son these past few days. Thankfully they did; otherwise, we would have been worried sick."
Qi Chong loosened the harness and said, "It's good that there's nothing to worry about."
Chen Ruolan sighed in relief, expressing gratitude for Lu Boss's generosity. "He's so wealthy; I don't even know how to thank him."
Yu Chunmiao linked arms with her mother as they walked inside. "Mama, I've already thanked him. You don't need to worry about it."
