It was all about secret recipes and money. She called Qi Chong, and after closing the kitchen doors and windows, the two of them got busy again.
They heated the milk until it was just about to boil, pouring it into six bowls, two of which were reserved for Qi Rong and Lu Zhi Xun. They skimmed off the foam and let the milk cool down.
Next, they prepared eggs, separating the egg whites. The egg whites were mixed with sugar until well combined. Once the milk had cooled, a layer of milk skin formed on the surface. Using chopsticks, they lifted the milk skin and poured the milk into the egg whites, allowing the milk to push up the skin.
They needed to cover the bowls with plastic wrap for steaming, but without any plastic wrap available, she simply used a plate to cover them. They steamed it over high heat for ten minutes, letting it sit for a minute after turning off the heat before taking it out.
Without a watch to time it, she counted silently in her head, estimating as best as she could. When Double Skin Milk was served, Lady Lu was delighted and insisted on having it often.
Yu Chunmiao looked at Lu Zi meaningfully and suggested, "I believe Madam will be enjoying this regularly in the future. If you buy my Fang Zi, Madam can have it every day."
Lu Ziyan understood immediately and said to Qi Chong, "I wonder if Brother Qi marrying Sister-in-law is your blessing or if it's my Xian Ke Lai's blessing."
"Buying is smart; not buying is foolish." Qi Chong simply smiled, "With a fairy descending to earth, of course, you all are sharing in my good fortune."
Lu Ziyan put away his Folding Fan and stood up. "Today's case should conclude; let’s discuss this milk tea and Double Skin Milk over dinner tonight!"
In the afternoon court session, Yu Chunmiao was no longer afraid of that imposing phrase. However, Yu Chun trembled on the ground in fear.
As a witness, no one expected Li Dongmei to come personally. She revealed the truth of the matter. Kneeling on the ground with tears streaming down her face, she said, "My lord, Min Girl and Yu Chunmiao did indeed have a few words, but she did not push me. It was Min Girl's husband who pushed me."
Before she could finish her sentence, Yu Chun rushed forward and kept hitting her head. "You wretched woman! I am Your Man! How could you side with an outsider?"
Zao Li was not one to back down easily; before he could even throw a couple of punches, he was pulled away.
The county magistrate did not hesitate to roar, "Court! Assaulting a witness, ten strikes for punishment!"
Yu Chun found himself pinned to the ground by two of the punishment sticks, unable to rise, while the other two Zao Li began to strike him with their boards. Contrary to what Yu Chunmiao had imagined, the boards were not aimed at his backside but rather at his back. The sound of the blows echoed in his chest, creating a dull thud that made it all the more painful.
After a round of cries and wails, Yu Chun quieted down, kneeling on the ground with his head bowed, too afraid to speak.
Xian Cheng said, "Witness, please continue."
Li Dongmei remained unaffected by her husband's beating and continued her account: "Yu Chun came to report that Min Girl was caught off guard. However, Min Girl was weak at that time and could not resist. He thought he could get compensation money to use for gambling."
Yu Chunmiao noticed sadness, disappointment, and determination in her eyes.
Xian Cheng reviewed the testimony in his hands and said, "According to Ji Tang Sun Da Fu's testimony, witness Li Dongmei's consultation date was August 16th, while villagers saw you being pushed down by the defendant on August 14th. Did you seek medical attention due to discomfort after being pushed?"
Li Dongmei replied, "Yes."
As the court session continued, Yu Chunmiao couldn't help but think how unfortunate it was that there was no Mid-Autumn Festival in this era.
