In this era, milk was a rare commodity that the original owner had never encountered in her lifetime. However, Yu Chunmiao had seen it before; not only had she seen it, but she also knew how to handle it. As an athlete, pure milk was essential to her diet. She didn't drink the milk that came in cartons that would spoil after a day; instead, she preferred fresh milk.
Thus, removing the unpleasant odor from the milk was something she did every day. After finishing her meal, she sought out Lu Ziyou and expressed her desire to teach the cook how to prepare the milk properly. Intrigued, Lu Ziyou accompanied her to the kitchen.
She instructed Qi Chong to start a small fire and poured the milk into a pot, adding some water and salt while stirring continuously. Just as the milk began to bubble, she quickly ladled it out. After her treatment, the milk had neither a burnt taste nor an off-putting smell.
The cook took a sip and nodded vigorously, declaring it delicious. With this preparation, the young master would no longer complain about the smell of milk. Yu Chunmiao smiled and suggested that next time they could add some sugar for an even better flavor. She reminded them that the ratio should be one part water to ten parts milk and that they needed to ladle it out as soon as it started boiling; otherwise, it would burn.
The cook nodded in agreement, grateful for the help. The doctor had mentioned that his wife was pregnant and that drinking milk would be beneficial, but the taste made her nauseous, making it impossible for her to drink.
After preparing the milk, the couple expressed their gratitude to Lu Ziyou for helping with the meal. Lu Ziyou was looking forward to Yu Chunmiao's culinary skills and graciously accepted their thanks.
The aroma of lunch soon attracted Lady Lu, who had been unable to eat properly for a month due to morning sickness. Lu Ziyou marveled at how full of surprises today had been.
The dishes on the table were unlike anything they had seen before, especially the steamed egg with minced meat, half of which Lady Lu devoured on her own. Her taste buds awakened as she dug into a plate of cold tofu.
"How is this tofu so delicious?" she wondered aloud. "The cooks in our household always make it taste strange."
Yu Chunmiao patiently explained the steps: "Tofu has a raw odor just like milk. It needs to be blanched in boiling water and then placed in cold water. Once it's cooled down, you can add seasonings and finally pour hot oil over it to enhance its flavor."
Lu Ziyou nodded in understanding. "No wonder! The cooks only mix things together; aside from the seasoning flavor, you can't taste anything else."
Finally enjoying a hearty meal for the first time in weeks, Lady Lu felt satisfied and went off for a nap.
As their pleasant lunch came to an end, Lu Ziyou accompanied them while they waited for court proceedings to begin and called for servants to bring tea. This time, the tea was different from before; it was black tea. Although the weather was still warm, they opted for it to soothe and nourish their stomachs as autumn approached.
With a sip of red tea, Yu Chunmiao suddenly stood up, looking at Qi Chong with a broad smile. Qi Chong was familiar with this smile; it was the same one she wore when they were working on Xian Cao Mi. He thought to himself that if Lu Ziyou weren't present, Yu Chunmiao would surely rush over to hug him.
Qi Chong smiled back at her and said, "Let's settle the lawsuit first."
Yu Chunmiao suppressed her laughter and sat back down to continue drinking her tea.
Lu Ziyou, feeling confused, asked, "What are you two talking about?"
Yu Chunmiao, trying to hold back her laughter, replied, "We're talking about money—your money and our money, an endless stream of it."
Lu Ziyou seemed to catch on to something and waved his fan, saying, "Well, I'll be watching closely!"
Feeling lighthearted, Yu Chunmiao headed to the county office, while Qi Chong went to pick up the witness sister. As soon as he met her, Qi Chong quickly asked for her name.
