Before long, Yacha arrived with Yu Chun, and Xian Cheng finally lifted his head, sitting up straight.
Shu Li called out from the side, "Kneel and pay your respects."
Both of them knelt down, bowing their heads repeatedly.
"Get up!" Shu Li commanded again.
They stood up and remained still.
Shu Li first asked for their names and places of origin, scribbling them down on a piece of paper.
Xian Cheng then spoke slowly, "The plaintiff accuses the defendant of pushing the plaintiff's wife, resulting in a miscarriage. Do you have any evidence?"
Yu Chun bent at the waist and replied, "Sun Daifu from Qing Shui Town's Renji Hall can testify. He treated my wife and said she had suffered a blow, causing instability in the pregnancy. After returning home from the clinic, she lay down to rest, and three days later, she miscarried."
As he spoke, tears began to flow down his cheeks. Wiping his eyes, he continued, "The fetus was already five months along and well-formed. The midwife said it was a boy. Sir, you must seek justice for us!"
Xian Cheng listened without changing his expression and then asked Yu Chunmiao, "Defendant, do you acknowledge the plaintiff's accusation?"
Yu Chunmiao stood tall and straight, denying it. "That day I went to Renji Hall for treatment and encountered Li Dongmei. She came up to me out of nowhere and started cursing; I only exchanged a few words with her but did not push her."
Before Xian Cheng could respond, Yu Chun interjected urgently, "Sir, listen! She admitted to arguing with my wife; my wife said it was her who pushed!"
Yu Chunmiao was about to refute this when Shu Li reprimanded him sharply, "Wait until you're asked before speaking."
Yu Chunmiao silently thanked his luck that he hadn't spoken out of turn.
Next, Shu Li moved closer to Xian Cheng, and they whispered to each other about something.
After a while, Shu Li said, "Plaintiff, you should return to the inn for now; we will call for you when needed. Wang Wu, escort the defendant."
Yu Chunmiao was bewildered; what kind of procedure was this? She thought they would argue fiercely until one of them was defeated.
Gathering her courage, she weakly asked, "Sir, we haven't reached a conclusion yet; can I leave now?"
Shu Li glanced at her and replied, "If you admit guilt in court, you can leave immediately. Since you deny it, we must gather evidence; let the evidence speak."
Yu Chunmiao immediately fell silent; so that was how it worked—just like in those dramas where everything is misleading.
Lu Ziyou was brought in by Wang Wu and bowed respectfully to Xian Cheng and Shu Li. Upon seeing him, smiles broke out on their faces.
Xian Cheng exchanged a few pleasantries with him before instructing him to take Yu Chunmiao away.
The brief court session eased some of Yu Chunmiao's worries; it seemed that the Yamen was still a place of reason. She believed in Qi Chong, certain that he would find evidence to clear her name.
On the way back, the curtains of the carriage were lifted, and the two sat facing each other. Yu Chunmiao felt grateful to Lu Ziyou for his assistance. "Thank you so much. I really don't know what I would have done without you. Please let my aunt know when the workers go to pick up the goods tomorrow, so she won't worry."
Lu Ziyou agreed, and as the carriage reached the entrance of the County Academy, they were just in time to pick up the two children after school.
While waiting for the little ones to come out, Yu Chunmiao asked him, "Did you have to spend money to get me out? How much did it cost? Please send a message back with the workers and bring some silver with you. If it's not enough, I'll pay you back slowly."
If there was one thing Yu Chunmiao hated most, it was snakes, and second was being in debt. If it weren't for her father Qi's debts, she would have had a much more complete life.
Lu Ziyou reassured her, "No need for money. Sister-in-law is not involved in any serious matters like murder or robbery; just a guarantee for your reputation will suffice. As long as Sister-in-law doesn’t run away, I have nothing to worry about."
Just then, the two children came out of the County Academy and climbed into the carriage. Qi Rong was pleasantly surprised.
Seeing Yu Chunmiao's red and swollen eyes and noticing Qi Chong's absence, he asked worriedly, "Sister-in-law, why are you crying? Did my brother bully you? Where is he?"
