Shi Song had a good temperament, but despite his impressive medical skills, he preferred to remain anonymous. Therefore, Qi Chong didn't want to reveal that they knew each other.
However, Yu Chunmiao was unaware of this and blurted out, "There's an Old Immortal with the surname Shi who gave him an injection. I wonder if that's the reason."
Yu Doctor suddenly understood. No wonder! His senior brother had already mastered the art of acupuncture and meridian therapy to perfection; it was indeed a stroke of luck to have him treat you.
"Senior brother?" Yu Chunmiao exclaimed, "But he's younger than you! He said he's only forty years old."
Upon hearing that the two were considered Shixiongdi (senior and junior brothers), Qi Chong felt reassured. He explained to Yu Chunmiao, "In the Shixiongdi relationship, age doesn't matter; it's all about who became a disciple first."
Yu Doctor understood this senior brother well, so he didn't mention anything else about him. Instead, he said, "Recently, someone has been looking for him. They said a certain official from Zhoufu is ill and came to my clinic once. I wonder if you've encountered them in your village."
Both of them replied that they hadn't.
Yu Doctor wanted to say more, but just then, someone carried an injured patient into the clinic, blood streaming from both legs. He hurried to treat the patient, and the two decided to leave the clinic.
On the way, Yu Chunmiao began her usual teasing of Qi Chong.
"Why can a Toad fly?" she asked.
"A Toad can't fly," Qi Chong replied.
"If a Toad eats an immortal's food, it can fly," she insisted.
Qi Chong remained silent.
"Why can a snake fly?" Yu Chunmiao continued.
"Did the snake eat an immortal's food too?" Qi Chong asked.
"The snake ate the Toad," she answered.
Qi Chong was speechless.
"Why can an eagle fly?" she pressed on.
"The eagle eats snakes," Qi Chong responded.
"The eagle flies whenever it wants," she declared.
"Then why can Yu Chunmiao fly?" Qi Chong countered.
"Did I just become an immortal?" Yu Chunmiao asked.
"No, it's me who will take you flying," Qi Chong replied.
"You dead man, can you not use nighttime talk to catch her off guard?"
The two of them joked and teased each other as Black Donkey diligently led them home.
At the entrance of their house, a group of villagers had gathered—about ten men and women. Qi Yuan stood at the door, which was closed.
Faintly, they could hear the villagers arguing, but Qi Yuan remained silent.
As soon as Black Donkey set foot down, the arguing ceased.
"Qi Daizi, you're here! Come help us!" one of the villagers called out.
"Yes, the village chief refused to sign the contract, but he didn’t say anything earlier. After dodging for so many days, we finally realized it. In half a month, the Yamen will come to collect the head tax. My family really can’t afford it; we have two able-bodied men who are already required to do corvée labor."
Crying could be heard; it was truly pitiful.
Perhaps they really couldn’t come up with the tax money, and many families might fall into despair from which they would never recover.
Qi Chong lowered his head in thought for a long time before saying to Yu Chunmiao, "Teach them how to dig for Banxia."
There was plenty of water in these mountains, so there must be other places with Banxia as well. From May to September was the harvesting season.
If they could dig some up and increase their yield, it would be enough to handle the head tax.
Yu Chunmiao had no objections; she just felt sorry that the Banxia on the mountain might soon become extinct.
She addressed the villagers, "I will teach you about a type of medicinal herb. You can dig it up and sell it at Chun Tang Pharmacy in town. But let me make this clear: if anyone gets into trouble while digging for herbs, don’t come looking for me."
