Qi Chong rushed out the door, scanning the surroundings under the moonlight. The street was empty, so he returned to the courtyard.
"Qian Duo Duo," he called softly to the dog. Qian Duo Duo wagged its tail and sat by his feet. Qi Chong opened the door just a crack and said, "Go!"
Qian Duo Duo squeezed through the gap, and soon, barking could be heard not far from the courtyard. Qi Chong led his younger brother towards the sound, only to find Yang Zhengshan hiding in the bushes by the roadside, making a shushing gesture towards Qian Duo Duo.
The dog continued to bark incessantly, while Qian Duo Duo mirrored its excitement. The brothers exchanged glances; Qian Duo Duo couldn't sit still, its eyes fixed on the intruder.
Yang Zhengshan awkwardly stood up and stepped out of the bushes, saying, "Just passing by, don’t misunderstand."
Qi Yuan stepped forward with a smirk, "At this hour, where exactly are you passing by my house? Off to gather firewood? Or perhaps digging for bamboo shoots?"
"I... I..." Yang Zhengshan stammered, struggling to come up with an excuse as he felt his brain cells dying off one by one. The Qi family’s place was so remote that hardly anyone came during the day, let alone at night.
Qi Chong patted Qian Duo Duo's head and said, "Yuan Er, teach him a lesson; let Duo Duo know it did well."
"Sure," Qi Yuan replied with a grin as he grabbed Yang Zhengshan by the collar and lifted him off the ground. He landed a punch in Yang Zhengshan's stomach, causing him to grunt and lose his breath.
Qi Yuan tossed him aside and warned, "If I catch you here again, I’ll make sure your mother wouldn’t recognize you."
Yang Zhengshan scrambled to his feet and fled in a panic. He had no idea that the Qi family kept a dog; he had come at night to sneak a peek at their courtyard and see how they cultivated their precious herbs. Unfortunately for him, just as he stepped outside the courtyard and onto a stone while trying to climb over the wall, he was met with barking.
Feeling guilty, he hid away but realized that the barking came from a puppy. He thought about grabbing a stick to hit it. However, before he could act on that thought, he was caught by the two brothers.
Qian Duo Duo seemed to know it had done well and followed Qi Chong eagerly seeking a reward. Qi Chong headed to the kitchen and took out a piece of meat from the pantry. Qian Duo Duo remained patient and sat waiting for its treat.
Swallowing a piece of Braised Pork, Qian Duo Duo became more certain of her family's position.
Bodyguard!
Yu Chunmiao listened to Qi Chong's account and patted his chest, saying, "And there's Qian Duo Duo; otherwise, it would have really succeeded. We need to give it Rou Rou to eat tomorrow."
They had already given it before; rewards and punishments must be timely. Yu Chunmiao couldn't agree more; training a horse was the same principle.
Qi Chong usually ignored dogs, only reaching out to pat them when they came close, and he certainly never fed them meat. He hadn't expected Qian Duo Duo to be quite reliable; perhaps distance had made the heart grow fonder, and the dog was seeking his attention.
Qi Chong practiced walking very carefully because he took care of his legs. If he felt uncomfortable while walking, he would stop to rest and then continue once he felt better. He often took the opportunity to walk the donkey while practicing, so neither task was neglected. By the end of July, as long as he didn't run, he could completely walk without crutches.
Qi Rong had already passed the elementary scholar exam, and the couple decided to go take a look. They also needed to finalize their business quickly; if they waited until autumn, Xian Cao Mi would no longer be available for sale.
Without waiting for the cargo cart, the two set off on their Donkey Cart. The early rice had already been harvested, and the farmers were busy plowing the fields in preparation for planting late rice.
On the road, they encountered Wang Butcher selling meat in town, with Lin Qiujiu also sitting in the cart. The day they bought the Donkey Cart, there were people watching; this was no longer news.
Along the way, Lin Qiujiu didn't forget to gossip about how Qian Dahua had let Zhang Guihua go, and that Zhang Guihua had recently been living by foraging for herbs. Furthermore, He Guangping had gone to the dilapidated temple twice at night and had been chased away by Zhang Guihua with a stick.
On their way to the county, the two carts parted ways. Yu Chunmiao truly disliked this village; it felt like there wasn't a single normal person around.
