Yu Chunmiao was utterly furious at Qi Chong's attitude towards the villagers, even though she herself had never experienced such things. She said, "Village Chief, let me be honest with you. I would rather tell strangers about Fang Zi than share it with anyone from Beishan Village, especially that person behind you."
Yang Zhengshan regretted coming with the village chief today; perhaps it would have been better if someone else had come instead. Gao Changfa thought about it and decided to risk everything for the position of village chief. "Why not have him bow at your father-in-law's grave and confess?" he suggested.
Yang Zhengshan tugged at the village chief's sleeve, looking innocent. Yu Chunmiao scoffed, "If he goes to my father-in-law's grave, he would disturb the peace of the old man. If he wants to atone for his sins, he should go to the Yamen and turn himself in; then I might consider it."
Yang Zhengshan felt relieved; what was the difference between bowing in confession and going to the Yamen? Qi Chong turned to Yu Chunmiao and said, "Qing Niangzi, let's tell the villagers that whoever can testify about what happened back then will receive Fang Zi. Do you think anyone will step forward to testify?"
Qi Yuan clapped his hands and exclaimed, "Great idea! I'll go say it right now." He started to leave, which terrified Yang Zhengshan. He rushed to block Qi Yuan at the door, pleading, "Qi kid, can we pretend I never came today? If you go out and shout like that, even without witnesses, a whole bunch will pop up."
Qi Yuan was strong and shrugged him off. "No way! I'm going." After saying that, he strode out while Yang Zhengshan hurried after him to stop him.
Yu Chunmiao waved over Qi Rong, who was standing nearby, whispered a few words in his ear, and he followed Qi Yuan out as well. "How can one repay kindness with enmity?" Yu Chunmiao mused aloud, causing the village chief's face to darken.
She continued, "It's not that we're selfish; we fear that if we tell you about Fang Zi, my father-in-law won't approve from beyond. Given past experiences, I'm worried our family won't end up well."
Gao Changfa watched Qi Yuan leave and feared that if he spoke up, chaos would ensue in the village. "I'll talk to you another day," he said before walking away.
Qi Rong ran up beside Qi Yuan and whispered a few words; Qi Yuan nodded in understanding and continued walking ahead. Yang Zhengshan circled around him, desperately pleading, "Kid, can we agree that I won't come again? Just don't go telling anyone in the village."
Despite his pleas, Qi Yuan ignored him completely. Qi Rong added fuel to the fire by saying, "Brother, let's tell Qiu Ju."
Yang Zhengshan listened, and it was more terrifying than the loud commotion in the village. At least with the shouting, he could know who was there to testify. But when it came from Lin Qiujiu's mouth, those people came quietly, making it hard to defend against them.
He was almost on his knees, desperately blocking Qi Yuan from leaving. Just then, Gao Changfa arrived and after some persuasion, Qi Yuan finally stopped in his tracks.
He said calmly, "It's fine if you don't want to go. My Sister-in-law said that next time anyone comes to our house, no matter who they are or what their purpose is, I should immediately go to the village and make a scene."
The two of them were taken aback for a moment but quickly nodded in agreement. However, they both had the mindset of agreeing first and planning later.
The two brothers walked away as if they had just won a great victory, their heads held high.
Not long after they left, they spotted Qian Duo Duo sitting there, wagging its tail and waiting for the brothers. It made soft sounds and happily approached them when it saw people coming.
Qi Rong scooped it up into his arms, allowing its fluffy head to rub against his chin as it licked his face.
Qi Yuan clicked his tongue in disdain and said, "Aren't you afraid of getting dirty? After lunch, wash your hands and face before sitting at the table. Otherwise, you can just eat with it."
Qi Rong gave Qian Duo Duo a kiss and replied, "Sure, I’ll wash my face and eat with it too."
With their banter, they missed lunch. Qi Yuan went to return the Ox Cart while Qi Chong busied himself kneading dough and cooking noodles.
During mealtime, Qi Rong took his bowl of noodles into the yard and shared half of his noodles with Qian Duo Duo. He squatted down on the ground, and there they were—one person and one dog—enjoying their meal together.
