The two of them sat on a stone under the shade of a tree, and Lin Qiujiu brought over a plate of sunflower seeds to offer them. Qi Chong declined, while Yu Chunmiao took a symbolic handful.
"Your family has been sending carriages every day; everyone in the village is asking about it. Some even went to see what was going on. Hmph, I’m not going to check it out myself. Why don’t they go?"
Yu Chunmiao's heart raced at the thought; if they really went to check, it would be trouble, especially with Lin Qiujiu being such a gossip.
"Thank you, Aunt. We’ll just brew some Xian Cao Tea. Qi Chong's old classmates asked for it, so we’re helping to brew it and earn a little money. As for what he does with it, we don’t know."
"If you want to know, go to the county and see for yourself. Just don’t come looking for trouble with me."
Lin Qiujiu waved her hand dismissively. "Oh, I understand! Who would want to let others learn their skills if they can make some money from them? When my husband was butchering pigs, people came to watch too. It’s a family trade; you can’t just learn by watching! That Wu Wang watched for two days and then went off to butcher one himself. Oh my Tian Ye, the meat was unrecognizable!"
"Butchering pigs is really hard to learn alone," she continued. "How many times would you fail and waste money before you finally got it right? So usually, those who butcher pigs around here have inherited the skill and learned it from a young age."
Yu Chunmiao smiled and said, "That’s true. Thank you for understanding, Aunt."
Lin Qiujiu was taken aback; it turned out Yu Chunmiao wasn’t foolish after all—she spoke quite clearly.
Qi Chong cleared his throat twice to draw attention back to himself. "I took her to town to see a doctor; she’s much better now and can speak."
Yu Chunmiao admired how quick-witted Qi Chong was.
Lin Qiujiu first congratulated him before saying in all seriousness, "Zhang Guihua from the old temple has run off; she hasn’t been seen for two days. They say she left Qi—oh no, I mean Zhang—behind."
Yu Chunmiao exchanged glances with Qi Chong, guessing that Zhang Guihua must have gone up the mountain.
Lin Qiujiu kept talking while the two listened politely. Before long, Wang Butcher arrived.
The two felt relieved and got up to greet the carriage.
Before long, news of Yu Chunmiao’s cleverness spread throughout the village.
What did it matter whether she was foolish or not? They were only concerned about what the carriage was bringing to the Qi Family.
Xian Cao Tea? Isn’t that just boiled grass? Did they really need a carriage for that?
The two chatted and laughed along the way, with Yu Chunmiao doing most of the talking while Qi Chong smiled.
Upon arriving at the clinic, there was a long line of seven or eight people outside Dr. Sun's office.
"You sit here; I'll go wait in line," Qi Chong said, leaning on his crutch as he joined the group of women. Among them, he stood out like a crane among chickens.
The young women stole glances at him, some shy and others blushing. Qi Chong remained expressionless, focusing straight ahead without looking sideways.
Behind him stood a striking young lady with delicate, arched eyebrows and cherry-red lips. She wore a sheer garment that hinted at her fragrant shoulders, and as she walked, her waist swayed like a willow.
The scent of perfume wafted from her, causing Qi Chong to unconsciously rub his nose. Since she entered, her gaze had not left him. She tilted her body slightly, continuously sizing him up from the side, occasionally stifling a giggle behind her silk handkerchief.
Unbeknownst to Qi Chong, Yu Chunmiao had noticed everything from her seat nearby. Propping her head on her hand, she lightly tapped her soft cheek with her fingertips, admiring his tall and elegant figure along with his perfect profile.
It was only natural for Mei Jiao Niang to be intrigued by such a handsome man.
"Achoo!" Qi Chong sneezed, vigorously rubbing his nose. He found it strange that there was such an overpowering scent in the clinic.
Looking around and glancing back confirmed the source of the smell; he quickly turned away and resumed waiting in line.
When Mei Jiao Niang caught sight of Qi Chong's face, she was first taken aback, then her eyes sparkled with interest as a blush spread across her cheeks.
