Qi Chong squeezed her shoulder and said, "My wife is smart. She learned it just by watching him for a while; it's not surprising."
Of course, it wasn't surprising. She could give horses injections, administer IVs, and even do simple hoof repairs. When a horse's belly was blocked with manure, she had even reached in to clear it out. In short, she learned everything related to horses.
Yu Chunmiao was quite pleased and began to sing on the deserted road.
"Let us accompany each other through the mortal world, eating our fill and riding freely, sharing the delights of life. With wine in hand, let us sing out our joy from the heart, passionately seizing the youth of our years."
Of course, when she sang the heartfelt lyrics about mountains without ridges, she was looking at Qi Chong.
Qi Chong felt his face flush all the way to his neck; if he weren't wearing clothes, he might have turned red all over.
After finishing the song, she mimicked Zi Wei's tone and said to him, "When mountains have no ridges and heaven and earth unite, only then would I dare to part with you."
The assistant couldn't take it anymore and jumped off the cart to sit at the back.
They hadn't even had breakfast before coming to haul goods; how could he feel so full?
With the assistant no longer around as a third wheel, Qi Chong quickly leaned in and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
Yu Chunmiao was unreserved; as long as there was no one on the road, she would pucker up for a kiss.
Qi Chong felt as if he were immersed in honey; he didn't even notice when the horse let out a foul smell.
They set off at the hour of the snake and arrived at the shop by noon.
When Lu Ziyou saw them, he couldn't hide his joy and hurriedly instructed the kitchen to prepare food.
This was also the first time someone had come to the shop since selling Xian Cao Mi. Seeing that there weren't many people around puzzled Yu Chunmiao.
Lu Ziyou, who was good at reading people, explained, "There are no customers at noon; they won't start coming until later in the afternoon."
Once they sat down in the Elegant Room, Yu Chunmiao asked, "How is Yu Daman?"
Lu Ziyou looked a bit surprised. "I sent word through an assistant to you; did you forget? Yu Daman has been in prison for over half a month. I set up a trap that got him caught right under the county magistrate's nose.
For business secrets worth ten taels of silver, he received a fine of one hundred taels and a ten-year prison sentence. He has no money to pay the fine and was sentenced to ten years in prison."
Yu Chunmiao felt a sense of revenge fulfilled wash over her; memories of the original owner’s grievances surged up unexpectedly. She turned away and covered her face as tears streamed down.
Qi Chong immediately stepped forward to comfort her. As soon as his hand rested on her shoulder, Yu Chunmiao threw herself into his arms and began to cry.
"I feel like my mother can finally rest easy now; I am happy."
"Then cry," Qi Chong said softly, "cry until you're done."
Lu Ziyou, confused, pointed at Yu Chunmiao, seeking help.
"Let her tell you in her own time," Chun Miao suggested. "For now, let her cry it out."
After venting her emotions, Yu Chunmiao wiped her tears and picked up the teacup to drink. As she swallowed the tea and exhaled the lingering bitterness, she met Lu Ziyou's questioning gaze.
"Yu Daman is my father," she stated.
Lu Ziyou felt a bit awkward; after all, it was he who had sent Yu Daman in and had even orchestrated his harsh punishment. But then he remembered that it was Yu Chunmiao's idea, which eased his discomfort.
Yu Chunmiao continued speaking about Yu Daman. When she recounted how he intended to sell his wife, leading to her tragic decision to drown herself, Lu Ziyou began to regret not having been harsher. He thought that perhaps a beating before sending him in would have been warranted, but it was too late for that now.
From then on, Yu Daman faced beatings in prison—sometimes from the guards, sometimes from fellow inmates. He spent nineteen years incarcerated before dying behind bars, never again seeing the light of day.
But that was a story for another time.
The food arrived, and Qi Chong had initially worried that Yu Chunmiao would be too heartbroken to eat. To his surprise, she had a hearty appetite and even found joy in the rice.
"I feel lighter," Yu Chunmiao said. "I feel like I'm halfway whole again."
