Qi Chong was momentarily taken aback, then silently recited the phrase, a seductive smile curling at the corners of his lips. "Thank you, Qing Niangzi, for the compliment. With you at home, this humble abode truly feels blessed."
He wasn't quite accustomed to calling her Qing Niangzi in front of family; he could easily say it when they were alone or in front of strangers.
Yu Chunmiao eagerly asked, "Do you know what that means? Have you heard it before?"
Qi Chong shook his head. "I haven't heard it, but I understand the meaning. Qing Niangzi has great literary talent."
Of course she did; anything from the texts was bound to be exquisite. It was the essence of five thousand years of Chinese culture.
However, she was amazed by the ancient people's comprehension skills.
Yu Chunmiao playfully continued, "What about this: '"Bent, then whole; crooked, then straight; low, then full; worn out, then renewed.'? What does that mean?"
Qi Chong parted his lips slightly and softly murmured it twice, resting his hands on the stove while contemplating the flickering flames.
Yu Chunmiao teased him, "Looks like I've stumped you!"
Unexpectedly, Qi Chong stared at her with a somewhat aggrieved expression. "Does Qing Niangzi want to say something to me? Are you dissatisfied with me?"
This sudden shift left Yu Chunmiao puzzled. "No, I was just asking you casually."
"Really? You’re not pointing something out about me? If so, I’ll change; I don’t want Qing Niangzi to be upset."
Seeing his humility, though she didn’t understand its origin, she wouldn’t allow it to continue. She wrapped her arms around his waist and looked up at him with bright almond eyes. "Husband, it’s fine. I like it. I was just testing you; I meant no harm."
With so much ancient literature memorized, why did she choose this particular phrase? It seemed to convey a lesson on morality; clearly, he understood.
Qi Chong embraced her and murmured, "As long as you don’t fly away, I’ll listen to whatever you say."
This made Yu Chunmiao recognize his insecurities. Was he feeling neglected lately because she hadn’t been affectionate?
Well then, as a legitimate couple, they should openly express their love—what’s the worst that could happen?
Sighing inwardly at her twenty-eight-year-old mentality still needing to comfort her husband, Yu Chunmiao followed Qi Chong into his room that night. He appeared genuinely surprised by her presence. Even with her leaning against him, he seemed unable to believe it.
Now that they had money at home and didn’t need to skimp on oil lamps, Yu Chunmiao generously ordered two.
One was placed on the bedside table and the other on the windowsill beside the bed.
Yu Chunmiao cupped the man's handsome face and shook it gently. "Tell me! Have you missed me?"
Yes! He must have missed her. After all, it had only been a little over ten days since he last acted playfully, and already he was feeling insecure, putting himself in such a humble position.
He did miss her!
His tone was still so submissive, and Yu Chunmiao didn't like it. She pressed a light kiss on his lips and gazed into his eyes with affection. "If you miss me, just tell me. Why do you have to be unhappy all alone?"
"I'm not unhappy!" Qi Chong panicked a bit, finally remembering to pull her into an embrace. "I'm happy. Seeing you makes me happy."
Still with that humble tone.
Yu Chunmiao recalled their first night together half a month ago when Qi Chong had been so nervous just being next to her. But as time went on, he became bolder, even asking her to help him with his needs.
He was like a little wolf pup.
But now, he was constantly acting so meek and pitiful, making her feel like she had to comfort him.
No way! She needed to cheer him up; she wanted a big wolf dog, not a little puppy!
