To be honest, Qi Chong's anger earlier had even frightened Yu Chunmiao. She didn't dare to advise him and only said, "Then you should talk to him sooner."
After dinner, when Yu Chunmiao saw Qi Chong head to the kitchen, she quietly sneaked into the backyard to eavesdrop, wanting to know the source of his anger.
Qi Chong sat on a stool, while Qi Rong was still wiping his tears.
Earlier, your sister-in-law said she couldn't understand what you meant. You replied that it wasn't wrong. But you insisted on saying word for word that those without knowledge are merely shells. Who were you talking about? Who did you mean was a fool? Were you referring to your sister-in-law or our mother?
Qi Rong seemed to grasp it halfway; he looked at his elder brother with a confused expression, as if he understood but also didn't.
Qi Chong exhaled sharply and said, "Just because you've learned a bit doesn't mean you should show off. Didn't your sister-in-law feel hurt listening to that? Didn't our mother feel hurt? If you go out and speak like that to others, won't everyone feel uncomfortable and annoyed with you?"
He paused before continuing, "Especially your sister-in-law; she's had a hard life with a gambling father. All her intelligence has to be hidden away. Luckily, it was your sister-in-law who asked today; if it were someone else, wouldn't they hold a grudge against you?"
Qi Rong finally understood that he often spoke without thinking, which could easily offend others.
"I was wrong. I'll apologize to my sister-in-law later."
At that moment, Yu Chunmiao pushed the door open and entered from the backyard. "No need," she said. "Your sister-in-law heard it."
She gently rubbed Qi Rong's head and said, "Your brother is right; we should be humble in our lives. If we have knowledge, we shouldn't flaunt it; if we have money, we shouldn't show off. In everything we do, we must be true to our conscience. Next time someone asks you about that shell and heart nonsense, just say that it means reading can broaden one's horizons. Leave it at that."
Qi Rong wiped his tears and looked sincerely at Yu Chunmiao. "Sister-in-law, I understand now."
Yu Chunmiao hugged him gently and said, "Don't hold a grudge against your brother; he's just worried you'll offend people in the future. You're about to start private school soon, and there will be all kinds of people outside."
"Use your heart to see people; don't comment too much—observe carefully. Gradually, you'll understand human nature and won't suffer like your father did."
As she spoke, she glanced at Qi Chong.
Sure enough, Qi Chong's eyes were red-rimmed. The death of Qi Fu had brought too many lessons to this family, and he didn't want anyone else to make the same mistakes.
Human nature can be deadly.
Having received a reprieve, Qi Rong slung his basket over his shoulder and headed out.
Today he needed to go towards Village East.
Qi Chong was still worried about whether Yu Chunmiao was angry. He took her hand and said somewhat submissively, "Yu Chunmiao, are you still mad? I promise there won't be another time. I won't let even a mother mosquito come near me. Please don't be angry; it's bad for your health."
Yu Chunmiao deliberately rolled her eyes at him and played with her braid without saying anything.
Qi Chong bent down to look her in the eye: "Trust me; even if one day you fly away, I won't want any other woman in this life. Forget about continuing the family line—damn it—all I want is you."
Yu Chunmiao didn't understand why he said she would fly away; she took it as a metaphor and continued his line of thought: "Who wants to continue your family line? If I'm unhappy, I might just fly away myself—at that point, whether it's a mother mosquito or a mother fly, I won't see them and won't be bothered."
As soon as those words were spoken, Qi Chong's heart felt as if it had been crushed by a stone, leaving him in despair. He pulled her into his arms, as if fearing she might truly fly away. "Please, don't go. Even if celestial soldiers come to take you, I won't let you leave."
His voice trembled with a hint of tears, and Yu Chunmiao wondered if she had taken things too far. She gently patted his back in reassurance. "I won't fly away. I'm not going anywhere, so please don't be sad."
Only after confirming multiple times that she wouldn't leave did Qi Chong finally feel at ease enough to release her.
Yu Chunmiao began to feel drowsy again, yawning widely. "Let's go to bed. Soon, I’ll need to help my mother make herbal jelly again. I don’t want to keep you up." Qi Chong said.
