Qi Fu suggested that it might be a long snake from the deep mountains that drove all the wild animals away. After finishing planting the seedlings, Qi Fu had some free time and went up the mountain every day. During that period, the harvest was quite abundant; there were wild boars and Azure Wind Antelopes brought home daily. At the very least, there were mountain chickens and Bamboo Rats.
Naturally, the villagers became envious, calculating Qi Family's income every day. For several days, groups of wild boars ran into the village, wreaking havoc on the crops and vegetable gardens. Just earlier, Qi Fu encountered a man named Yang Zhengshan, who suggested to the village chief that Qi Fu should take the villagers up the mountain to hunt boars.
Qi Fu agreed and took the men from the village to dig traps in the mountains. After finishing the traps, they checked them daily. To be safe, Qi Fu instructed everyone to move in groups of three and not stray too far apart; if someone shouted for help, others would come to assist.
Eventually, only Yang Zhengshan remained with Qi Fu as they went to check on the traps together. The traps yielded a good catch; besides a wild boar weighing over two hundred pounds, there was also a deer. The deer was already dead, its body serving as a cushion for the wild boar, so the sharp wooden stakes did not kill it.
When the wild boar saw people approaching, it went berserk and attacked. Qi Fu stood in front of Yang Zhengshan and was knocked unconscious. The wild boar escaped, and instead of checking on Qi Fu, Yang Zhengshan secretly took the deer home before returning to find help. It seemed he didn't want other villagers to know about the deer’s existence, nor did he offer any assistance because a single deer could sell for five or six taels of silver. It was a male deer with antlers at just the right time for harvesting; its price would double.
Qi Fu was bitten by a snake. When he woke up, he performed some basic first aid but it was still too late. Qi Chong's gaze darkened; his eyes were red-rimmed as his voice trembled slightly: "My father has been lying in bed for two years. We’ve hired countless doctors and spent so much on medicine to no avail. Our family sold our land, and my mother sold her jewelry. I dropped out of school to hunt every day, yet I still couldn’t save my father’s life."
The more Yu Chunmiao listened, the more uncomfortable she felt; she cursed Yang Zhengshan repeatedly. "That beast! May he suffer in eighteen layers of hell under Yama King’s rule and never be reborn! He deserves to be fried in an oil pot while my father's spirit watches!"
By the time she ran out of curses, her words became incoherent. Qi Chong squeezed her angry little face and continued: "He really didn’t have to do that because we had all agreed that whatever we caught in those traps belonged to the entire village. Perhaps because the deer was too valuable, Yang Zhengshan succumbed to greed."
After Qi Fu fell ill, Qi Chong dismantled all the traps.
Some people still wanted to set traps, but even the wild boars wouldn’t fall for them, so the villagers lost interest in hunting.
Yu Chunmiao thought it was strange; since the whole village had benefited, and her father-in-law was ill, everyone should chip in to help pay for his treatment. Qi Chong told her that on that day he and his mother had gone door to door asking for help, but they couldn’t even gather a couple of taels of silver. Only Wang Butcher’s family had given him six large coins.
Wang Butcher’s family had always been well-off and hadn’t participated in the pig hunting. Now Yu Chunmiao understood why the Qi family didn’t associate with the villagers. Even when it came to handling marriage documents, they bypassed the village chief and went directly to the county.
Time had passed, and there was no point in dwelling on it; what mattered was living well in the future. To cheer Qi Chong up, Yu Chunmiao leaned against his back and began to sing softly in his ear.
"You ask me how deep my love for you is, how much I truly care. My feelings are sincere, my love is profound; the moon represents my heart." With each line of the heartfelt lyrics, she planted kisses on his cheek, visibly lifting Qi Chong’s spirits.
The man wore a handsome smile that brightened his face like the clear sun shining down on them. After teasing him enough, Yu Chunmiao dozed off on his broad back for a while, and before she knew it, they had arrived at Xian Ke Lai.
Unlike last time, there was already a clerk anxiously waiting outside.
