Lin Qiujiu replied, "He's still locked up. Qian Dahua is insisting on a divorce, and all of Wang Xicai's relatives have come. They've been busy with the divorce lawsuit lately."
"Oh dear, isn't that just like being divorced by his wife? What a disgrace to the ancestors!" Qi Ping sat on the ground, growing more and more sorrowful as he listened. His cries reminded Lin Qiujiu to lower her voice. "Zhang Guihua is also locked up. Qi Changsheng said he wants to divorce her. Qi Rong broke free from a group of gossiping aunts and said, "I don’t know; I’m going home."
After saying that, he left but paused for a moment to glance at Qi Ping, feeling a twinge of sympathy in his heart.
Upon returning home, Yu Chunmiao greeted him and helped him with his basket. "Our great contributor is back! You’ve worked hard; make sure to put extra meat in your bowl tonight."
Qi Rong's spirits lifted at Yu Chunmiao's words. "Sister-in-law, I can gather even more."
Yu Chunmiao wiped his sweat and said, "No need for that; just rest today. Once the fairy grass is dried, I’ll prepare some first. Once we have a market for it, you can gather more. When the time comes, I’ll go with you."
Qi Rong recalled what had happened in the village and expressed his concern. "Sister-in-law, please don’t go out there. I’m afraid someone might cause you trouble if they see you."
He didn’t know why he felt that way; he just sensed that this situation could bring trouble to her. It was safer for her to stay with his older brother.
Chen Ruolan came out of the hall and asked, "Why? What did your son hear in the village?"
Qi Rong glanced around and asked, "Where’s my brother?"
If something was going on, he needed to discuss it with his brother; he was the pillar of support.
Yu Chunmiao led Qi Rong into the kitchen, where Qi Yuan had just finished bathing and was helping set the table.
As the family sat down together for dinner, Qi Rong stuffed pieces of stewed meat into his mouth while recounting what had happened that day. "That’s about it; I hope I didn’t miss anything important. Otherwise, I’ll ask Wang Shenzi tomorrow; she seems to know everything."
After hearing this, Yu Chunmiao bit her chopsticks, feeling uneasy inside. To resolve her troubles, she had casually mentioned things earlier, intending only to downplay her conflict with Zhang Guihua. She hadn’t expected it to be true.
The two families were at odds with each other and were on the brink of breaking apart. Adults make mistakes; whatever consequences arise are their own doing. But harming a child and leaving them homeless—she couldn’t bear that thought.
Qi Chong's gaze never left her, having noticed something was off.
"What's wrong? Is your mouth still bitter?"
Yu Chunmiao nodded, counting the rice noodles as she sent them to her mouth.
Inside, she felt conflicted. Since before the family had split, Qi Changsheng and his wife had always bullied their mother-in-law, and she felt no burden for what they had endured. But what about Qi Ping? He slept in a broken temple, often going without food, and it was truly pitiful.
Both Yu Chunmiao's understood the pain of being abandoned by their parents. Although she didn't like Qi Ping, the child was innocent.
