"Yu Chunmiao, why don't we just not sell it?" Chen Ruolan suggested. "How can we eat this Zao Hui Shui? It wouldn't be good if someone got sick from it."
Getting someone sick could lead to a lawsuit.
Upon hearing this, Yu Chunmiao recalled the process of making Xian Cao Mi, where the Zao Hui Shui was boiled, and thought there was nothing to worry about.
Chen Ruolan continued to persuade her, "It's not just about the water; my mother said it's ash."
Qi Yuan, overhearing this, suddenly found the remaining Xian Cao Mi in his bowl unappetizing. He looked at the dwindling amount and instinctively placed a hand on his stomach. What if he got sick tonight?
Yu Chunmiao patiently explained, "When Doctor Yu treats injuries, he always heats things up over the fire. Can you guess why? We boil water before drinking it; do you know why?"
Qi Chong swallowed a mouthful of Xian Cao Mi and replied, "When the temperature is high, all the dirt is gone. The Zao Hui is the same; it looks dirty after being burned, but it's actually clean. My father had a small scrape when he went hunting in the mountains, and he used Zao Hui to treat it."
Hearing that her dear Brother Zheng thought the same way reassured Chen Ruolan quite a bit.
Qi Yuan decided to swallow the last bite without further thought. After all, he had already eaten two bowls; getting sick over this little bit didn't matter.
Yu Chunmiao served herself a bowl but noticed Qi Rong was missing, so she had to eat alone. The rice flour dish wasn't as smooth as one made with tapioca flour, but it was still acceptable.
Just as she was about to dig in, Qi Chong pressed down her hand that was bringing food to her mouth and said, "I just remembered that Sun Daifu said you can't eat anything cold or cool; you shouldn't eat this."
Yu Chunmiao completely forgot that Sun Daifu had mentioned this. Reflecting on her time at Renji Hall when Qi Chong said he asked Sun Daifu some questions, she realized those details must have been included.
She initially wanted to act cute and sneak in another bite, but knowing how much Qi Chong cared about her health made her decisively put down the bowl and obediently drink her medicine instead.
Regardless of which Yu Chunmiao it was, she had never drunk traditional Chinese medicine before.
When she took her first sip, she immediately gagged and cried out in tears, "I can't drink this! It's too bitter!"
Qi Chong hurriedly fetched some sweetened water and coaxed her gently, "Come on now, finish it in one go, and then you can have sweet water afterward; it won't be bitter anymore."
Yu Chunmiao held the medicinal wine after much mental preparation, pinched her nose, and gulped it down in one breath. She quickly followed it with half a bowl of sweet water.
However, upon tasting the sweet water, she hardly felt any sweetness at all.
Television dramas weren't entirely misleading; traditional Chinese medicine was indeed bitter. It seemed Lin Mei Mei's life was truly hard. She felt nauseous and rinsed her mouth several times but still found no flavor in the noodles. After just a couple of bites, she set down her chopsticks.
Seeing her discomfort made Qi Chong's heart ache. He encouraged her gently, "Doctor Qi said that once your little troubles are over, you won't have to drink bitter medicine anymore; then you'll just take pills for nourishment."
Yu Chunmiao prayed for Aunt Flo to visit soon.
Qi Yuan found his younger brother in the house.
"Why are you hiding in here? Sister-in-law is making Xian Cao Jelly, it's really delicious. You should go have a bowl," he said.
Qi Rong made a face of disgust and replied, "I don't want to eat it; it has Zao Hui in it."
Qi Yuan explained about Yu Chunmiao and Qi Chong, but Qi Rong still resisted. "I’ll eat it later if you guys don’t play with the javelin tonight."
"Then are you not going to eat dinner?" Qi Yuan ruffled his hair and said, "If you don’t eat, you’ll end up with nothing. That bowl of yours has the most meat, and Mom even added an egg for you."
Qi Rong asked worriedly, "What about the Xian Cao Jelly? Sister-in-law won’t let me have any, right?"
Qi Yuan pulled his younger brother away and said, "Who cares about that? Sister-in-law has already gone to wash up and prepare for bed."
The night passed without incident; no one played with the javelin.
Except for Qi Chong, who had some trouble sleeping.
