Qi Chong scooped the Xian Cao Tea into the bowl and asked in confusion, "What is Lye? What is Tapioca Flour?"
Yu Chunmiao thought about the original owner's life; she had indeed harvested Xian Cao to brew Liang Cha before, but only for ten minutes, and she had never made it into a jelly. This meant that there was no Xian Cao Mi here.
Her mind raced. Her grandmother had made Xian Cao Mi countless times in front of her. Without food-grade lye, Plant Ash could be used as a substitute. If there was no Tapioca Flour, could Rice Flour be used instead? How much would a bowl cost? Sanwen? Wu Wen? The southern summers were long, and the heat was intense.
Qi Chong saw her standing there, her eyes moving but her body completely still. Just as he was about to ask what she was thinking, she suddenly jumped up, spinning around in place and shouting, "We Got Rich! We are going to get rich!"
Qi Chong understood; she was thinking of some way to make money again, likely involving something he didn’t know about. It probably had to do with the Xian Cao Tea he was currently brewing.
Yu Chunmiao bounced a few more times before wrapping her arms around Qi Chong's waist and continuing to jump. If he hadn’t been holding onto the stove, she might have knocked him over.
"Qi Chong," she exclaimed, "I can make delicious and beautiful things with Xian Cao! We’ll have a way to make money!"
Qi Chong jumped slightly to steady himself, looking at her with a fond expression. He gently brushed his finger against her nose and said, "Alright, what can I do for you?"
Yu Chunmiao buried her head in his embrace, stomping her little feet on the ground while swaying his body. "I saw a Stone Mortar in the storeroom; can you help me grind half a pound of Rice Flour?"
With one hand gently rubbing her back, Qi Chong replied softly, "Sure, I’ll do whatever you ask."
Overwhelmed by his tenderness, Yu Chunmiao's voice became soft and sweet. "Qi Chong, you’re so nice."
Chen Ruolan went to the Vegetable Garden to weed and spotted Qi Rong peeking around the Kitchen door, occasionally covering her mouth to stifle giggles.
She quietly approached Qi Rong from behind and looked inside to see Qi Chong holding Yu Chunmiao, pinching her cheeks and playfully scratching her nose. The room was filled with warmth and affection.
But this was certainly not something children should be watching!
Qi Rong had one hand over her mouth and the other twisting her ear as she was led away. If it weren’t for Chen Ruolan’s presence, she would have doubted whether she had stumbled upon something inappropriate.
Without hesitation, Qi Rong picked fresh Xian Cao for their use; thus, the Sauce turned out green. The scooped Xian Cao was poured into the pot for further boiling while Yu Chunmiao used Plant Ash to filter water for sedimentation. Qi Chong sat at the dining table grinding White Rice in the Stone Mortar.
In the past, he would never have used precious White Rice for experimentation, but given Yu Chunmiao's previous performances, he thought it might be worth a try. Besides, even if it failed, he wouldn’t say anything; being able to eat White Rice at home was all thanks to his wife’s efforts.
Chen Ruolan watched the young couple busy at work, the pot of Xian Cao Tea becoming increasingly thick and green, looking somewhat sticky and unappetizing.
"What are you two up to?" she asked. "Yu Chunmiao, what's this basin of gray water for? Qi Chong, you're twenty now; you don't still want to eat rice porridge, do you?"
Yu Chunmiao replied mysteriously, "You'll know once it's done." She wasn't sure if it would turn out well, so she decided to keep quiet for now.
Qi Rong caught a whiff of the Xian Cao Tea and entered the kitchen. "Big Brother, why isn't the Xian Cao Tea ready yet? I want some."
Without looking up, Qi Chong replied, "If you're thirsty, go drink some water. Your sister-in-law is making something else."
Qi Yuan came in carrying a piece of willow wood, sweating profusely from the heat. He fanned himself with his shirt as he approached to ask for some Xian Cao Tea but was dismissed by Qi Chong with the same excuse.
Feeling more aggrieved, Qi Rong went over to Qi Yuan, who was peeling bark. "Did Er Ge not get any Xian Cao Tea either? Big Brother and Sister-in-law are being all mysterious; they won't let us know what they're doing." Hmph, he was the one who picked the Xian Cao after all.
Qi Yuan directed his younger brother, "Clear the bark and lay it out by the wall to dry."
Qi Rong pouted even more, working with a heavier heart as he continued his task.
