Yu Chunmiao could sense the mocking tone in the villagers' voices. She knew her father was only trying to help drive away the wild boars that threatened their crops, but she was unaware of any grievances between him and the villagers. For now, she chose to play the fool and remained silent.
"Is this the silly wife you bought for a few silver coins?" The speaker was He Guang, a notorious scoundrel in the village. He pushed through the crowd and approached Yu Chunmiao, his eyes roving over her.
Qi Chong stepped in front of Yu Chunmiao, blocking her from view and ignoring He Guang.
He Guang leaned forward, peering around Qi Chong. "What a beautiful little wife you have! Too bad she's a fool. Qi Chong, you're quite the catch; she doesn't deserve you. Why not sell her to me? I wouldn't mind."
In this era, it was common for women bought as wives to be sold again.
Qi Chong's eyes narrowed dangerously as he glared at He Guang. "What gives you the right to say that? Get lost!"
He Guang continued to search for Yu Chunmiao's gaze, completely oblivious to Qi Chong's anger. "Look at that figure and that delicate face! Even if she's a fool or crazy, I'd take her. I'll offer you five silver coins; you'd still make a profit of two."
Qi Chong's temper flared, and he clenched his fists, ready to strike. Just then, Chen Ruolan grabbed his hand, holding it down. "He Guang, don't speak such nonsense! Once she steps into my Qi Family's door, she's one of us. My daughter-in-law is not for sale—get that out of your head!"
Only then did He Guang take a step back, realizing that both Qi Chong and Chen Ruolan were fiercely protective of Yu Chunmiao.
"I see Qi Chong is quite taken with her," he sneered. "A fairy-like girl who can't even speak—what a catch! You must be too attached to let her go. If you're hesitant, I can pay you every time; just name your price."
Before He Guang could finish his sentence, darkness clouded his vision as he suddenly stumbled backward, crashing to the ground.
A villager remarked, "Qi Family's eldest son, if you don't want her, why resort to violence?"
Chen Ruolan turned sharply to the onlookers who were making light of the situation. "Why don’t you let your daughters be sold off? You all lack compassion! Do you think Brother Zheng deserves to get hurt for your amusement? It's disgraceful!"
Previously, Chen Ruolan had refrained from mentioning Brother Zheng’s injury. Now that she brought it up, the villagers fell silent, feeling uncomfortable.
After several seconds of nursing his bruised eye, He Guang finally removed his hand from his face and cursed loudly. "You hit me over a bought fool? You crippled bastard! Just wait until I get my revenge!"
Seeing He Guang charge at Qi Chong again made Yu Chunmiao anxious for him; she stepped in front of him instinctively.
Qi Chong pulled her aside and caught He Guang’s incoming punch with one hand, twisting it painfully behind his back while gradually increasing the pressure.
He Guang cried out in pain as he fell to his knees. "Let go of me! I won't do it again! Please spare me!"
With an icy glare, Qi Chong threatened him further: "I don't care if I'm limping on one leg; I could still crush you like an ant with one hand. My wife is off-limits—if I catch you looking at her again, you'll lose more than just your legs."
With that warning, Qi Chong exerted more force and flung He Guang away.
"Forget about riding in that ox cart; just get lost!"
He Guang clutched his trembling arm as he struggled to rise from the ground, seething with anger. "Qi Chong, just wait and see!"
Qi Chong picked up a stone from the ground, pinched it between his fingers, and flicked it at He Guang's knee.
"Ouch!" He Guang cried out and knelt down again.
Holding another stone, Qi Chong said fiercely, "Whoever from my family is involved, I’ll come after you. Next time, I’ll aim for your eye."
He Guang dared not say anything more and stumbled off in the direction of home, muttering to himself, "A gentleman takes revenge; ten years is not too late."
Yu Chunmiao looked up at Qi Chong with a wronged expression, pouting as she said, "I got you into trouble."
Qi Chong softened his tone, calming his anger. "What trouble is he?"
Yu Chunmiao thought about how her own leg troubles had caused issues, waking up early and working late every day. Shouldn’t she be kinder to her?
