As soon as she entered, Qi Yuan hurriedly helped his elder brother sit up against the wall. Yu Chunmiao sat by the bed, blowing on the medicine, while Qi Chong gazed at her intently. Although she had been eating well these days, the fatigue had not allowed her to gain much weight. Her complexion remained somewhat sallow, and her body was still so thin. She was unwilling to spend a single coin on herself, instead pouring all her earnings into her family.
Seeing her smile, revealing dimples on her cheeks, Qi Chong silently vowed to treat her well in the future. He wanted to make her beautiful clothes and ensure she grew plump and healthy.
“Come on, drink your medicine; it’s not hot anymore.” Yu Chunmiao held a spoonful of medicine to his lips.
Qi Chong opened his mouth and swallowed it down; it was both bitter and sweet.
While feeding him the medicine, Yu Chunmiao spoke, “This is a bone-strengthening medicine. You should take it every evening before dinner, and in the morning you need to take pain relief medicine. Is there anything you want to eat? I can buy it for you when I go sell goods.”
Qi Chong shook his head and weakly replied, “I’m already doing well. I can smell the bone soup; did you add radish?”
Yu Chunmiao nodded and said, “Doctor Yu said you need to eat better. The bones aren’t expensive; my second brother helped me break them up, and the marrow is delicious.”
With a pained expression in his eyes, Qi Chong said, “Qi Yuan will be back in a few days. I’m not much help right now; if you have anything to do, let him handle it. Don’t tire yourself out.”
Qi Yuan immediately expressed his determination, “Yes, sister-in-law! I heard from Qi Rong that you’ve been working non-stop these days and are very tired. When I come back, just let me know what you need.”
Yu Chunmiao smiled gently and brought another spoonful of medicine to Qi Chong’s lips. “That sounds good! I’m just waiting for the bitter times to pass.”
Qi Chong smiled faintly; he believed that day would surely come.
That evening, Qi Yuan was supposed to leave, but when Chen Ruolan moved a chamber pot and a night pot into Qi Chong’s room, he felt it would be better to stay.
Yu Chunmiao began to worry about what would happen tomorrow when his second brother left and how they would solve Qi Chong’s big issues. She pondered deeply until suddenly an idea struck her.
“Second brother, can you help me make something tomorrow if I draw it out?”
Qi Yuan confidently replied, “Sister-in-law, don’t draw anything too complicated; I can make simple things in a day.”
Yu Chunmiao walked over to the desk, took out some paper and ink, and soon sketched out what she needed.
Qi Yuan looked at it and said, “Isn’t this just a stool? The seat is empty; it’s easy to make. What do you need it for?”
Yu Chunmiao whispered a few words in his ear. Qi Yuan suddenly understood and exclaimed with realization, “Sister-in-law, you’re really clever! I’ll finish it first thing tomorrow morning and bring it back after work.”
“What are you two talking about?” Qi Chong asked.
Qi Yuan showed him the drawing and explained in detail, “Look, this looks like a stool with an empty space in the middle where we can place the chamber pot underneath. When elder brother needs to relieve himself, we can move it next to the bed so he can sit comfortably. Sister-in-law is really smart; she says this is called a toilet.”
Qi Chong facepalmed himself, his face turning red.
That night, Qi Yuan and Qi Rong returned to their own rooms while Yu Chunmiao originally planned to sleep in Chen Ruolan’s room. However, unable to shake off her worries, she moved into Qi Chong’s room in the middle of the night.
She held the oil lamp and examined him closely, noticing the sweat on his face, his dry lips, and his slightly furrowed brows.
She reached out to touch his forehead and found it burning hot.
In the dead of night, Yu Chunmiao decided not to call anyone for help and went to the kitchen to prepare medicine herself. As the herbs simmered on the stove, she carried a bowl of water into Qi Chong's room.
Chen Ruolan was awakened by the smell of the medicine and followed the light into her son's room.
Yu Chunmiao was struggling to prop up Qi Chong, and Chen Ruolan hurriedly asked, "What’s wrong?"
