Qi Yuan helped Yu Chunmiao carry the basket. He wanted to lift the banana leaves, but Yu Chunmiao pressed them down firmly, saying, "Don't look; it's not for your eyes."
What could possibly be so shameful? If it’s not meant to be seen, then so be it.
Chen Ruolan said to the cart driver, Wang Butcher, "Please wait here after selling the meat. We still have to go back. One more person means eight coins."
Yu Chunmiao hurriedly took out the money before her mother-in-law could. With this back-and-forth, Wang Butcher earned an extra ten coins or so and happily agreed.
Only Zhou Min remained on the cart. She glanced into the medical clinic before getting back on the Ox Cart and leaving.
Upon entering the clinic, Yu Doctor was already waiting. "You’re here? Go in and lie down; let me take a look."
Qi Chong nodded and walked straight to a partition. He lifted the curtain and stepped inside. The whole family wanted to follow, but Yu Doctor turned around and scolded, "Only one person can come in."
Yu Chunmiao raised her hand and said, "I’ll go. My mother-in-law isn’t well, and my second brother isn’t home; it’s just me."
Yu Doctor sized her up and said, "Just don’t be scared when the time comes."
Scared? She had seen horse dissections; it was just a broken leg—what was there to be afraid of?
Yu Chunmiao told her mother-in-law, "Mother, you and my second brother should go sell the goods first."
Chen Ruolan agreed; after all, selling things wouldn’t take too long. So she went with Qi Yuan to Hui Chun Tang to sell their items.
The partition was small, about seven or eight square meters. There was a single bed against the wall and a square table beside it where Yu Doctor’s tools were laid out: hammers, saws, and other similar dissection instruments—needles as thick as awls made Yu Chunmiao swallow hard. She had forgotten that this was an ancient time with rudimentary medical equipment that was simple yet brutal.
Qi Chong set down his crutch and lay flat on the bed while Yu Chunmiao hurriedly helped him take off his shoes.
Yu Doctor lifted his trouser leg for a look, causing Yu Chunmiao to gasp in shock. The external wounds had healed, but the flesh was pushed up by broken bones underneath.
How painful must that be? How could he endure it every day like nothing happened?
"Bear with it," Yu Doctor said calmly as Qi Chong nodded in response.
After saying this, Yu Doctor began to press on his calf, feeling along the area where the bone was broken. Qi Chong's lips trembled from the pain; even his scalp felt tight.
In ancient times without light, healing relied on touch alone.
Once Yu Doctor finished examining him, he left. Qi Chong gasped for air; in just that short time, he was already drenched in sweat, his shirt soaked through at the chest.
Yu Chunmiao wiped his sweat with her sleeve and frowned slightly. "If it hurts, just shout out; don’t hold it in."
Qi Chong shook his head and replied, "Shouting won’t change anything; I might as well save my strength. If Mother hears me, she’ll just cry."
The illness of the mother was expressed through tears, from the day the father fell ill until his passing.
Qi Chong turned to Yu Chunmiao and said, "You shouldn't stay here; it will be bloody soon."
Seeing her fear of snakes, he added, "You might get scared to death."
Yu Chunmiao replied firmly, "Don't worry, I'm not afraid. I'm braver than you think."
Qi Chong did not believe her at all. He sat up seriously and said, "Yu Chunmiao, I will have to cut skin and break bones soon. It's going to be terrifying. You should wait outside; come back when it's over."
Yu Chunmiao furrowed her brows slightly and took his hand, saying, "What does it matter if it's scary? The hardest part will be for you. It's better to have family around during tough times."
Qi Chong's heart softened completely; he unconsciously tightened his grip on her hand. His gentle phoenix eyes could melt anyone's heart.
Before long, Chen Ruolan and Qi Yuan returned. She saw Yu Doctor outside preparing medicine and called out to Yu Chunmiao from the partition.
Chen Ruolan handed her the silver earned from selling Banxia, saying, "One tael and three hundred sixty-seven coins; you can count it."
Yu Chunmiao simply placed the money into her pouch and said, "There's no need to count it; let's just buy some meat to eat when we get back."
