Yu Chunmiao and Qi Chong knew that treating his leg was no small matter, and they felt it was necessary to inform Yuan Er. Chen Ruolan felt a bit awkward because visiting her son meant she would have to buy gifts.
Without further ado, Yu Chunmiao took her mother-in-law to buy a bag of Yan Ye, along with a pound of Zhu Wuhua and a pound of lean meat, as her craving for meat had returned. Every time she earned money, the image of Braised Pork filled her mind.
Yu Chunmiao sighed; didn’t everyone who traveled through time have a golden finger? She certainly didn’t have one, yet her desire for meat only grew stronger.
Arriving at Xiao Carpenter's yard, she found the gate open, and four or five men were busy inside. Chen Ruolan spotted her son, Yuan Er, immediately.
Hearing his mother’s call, Qi Yuan put down the planer and came to the gate. The Qi family genes were indeed strong; although Qi Yuan wasn’t as tall as Qi Chong, he bore a striking resemblance to him—about seventy to eighty percent alike. Each brother had his own charm; Qi Yuan appeared more rugged while Qi Chong was tall and slender with softer, more refined facial features.
“Mother, I’ll be going back in a few days. What brings you here?” Qi Yuan asked Yu Chunmiao with a slight nod.
Yu Chunmiao felt a bit displeased at his lack of courtesy; he wasn’t as charming as Qi Rong. Chen Ruolan supported Yu Chunmiao’s back and introduced her: “This is your Sister-in-law. Thanks to her earning money, your elder brother can get his leg treated. He’ll be seeing Yu's Bone Setting in two days, so we came to let you know.”
Qi Yuan was surprised; wasn’t his sister-in-law supposed to be a mute who couldn’t laugh or cry? How could she earn money to help his brother?
Yu Chunmiao handed Yan Ye to Qi Yuan and said, “Here, this is a gift for your master. In two days, take some time off and help carry your brother to the clinic.”
Qi Yuan felt a bit awkward but then respectfully bowed and called out, “Sister-in-law.”
Yu Chunmiao thought this was much better. “Make sure to come by in two days; we need to get back home to cook meat for Qi Rong.”
Only then did Qi Yuan notice the meat in Yu Chunmiao’s basket. He wanted to ask how she had earned the money but was interrupted by the call of his fellow apprentices: “Yuan Er! The wedge is in; have you finished planing the frame?”
Before Qi Yuan could respond, Chen Ruolan pushed him inside. “Go on now; remember to come back in two days! No one in our family can help your brother like you can.”
Yu Chunmiao felt elated; earning a couple of taels each day meant they were getting rich! They would have white rice and meat every day now. She chatted and laughed with her mother-in-law all the way home.
As soon as they returned home, they saw Qi Chong waiting outside the yard. He reached out to help Yu Chunmiao take off her basket, but the way he opened his arms looked like he wanted to embrace her.
Just as Yu Chunmiao was feeling joyful, she stepped forward in three strides and wrapped her arms around Qi Chong’s waist.
“I earned a tael and a half today! I told Yu Doctor that I’d take you for treatment in a couple of days,” she exclaimed.
Chen Ruolan was startled and rushed into the yard; this was something she couldn’t bear to witness as a mother-in-law!
Qi Chong was so startled by the embrace that he couldn't find his voice, unsure of where to place his hands. His handsome face flushed crimson, and his heart raced as if it might leap from his throat.
He forgot to breathe, standing there in a daze, watching the fluffy little head nestled in his arms. The girl's warm breath seeped through the fabric, sending shivers down his spine.
After a moment, Yu Chunmiao released him and walked away. Qi Chong finally regained his ability to breathe, standing outside in the yard for a long time, unable to calm himself, with one hand still raised, forgotten.
His mind was filled with thoughts of Yu Chunmiao; the embrace he had yearned for over the past few days had come so unexpectedly, without any warning or preparation.
"Brother, what are you doing standing out here?" Qi Rong returned with a half-full basket of Banxia and noticed his elder brother's flushed face and dazed expression.
Qi Chong was jolted back to reality by his younger brother's voice. He took a few deep breaths and silently returned to the kitchen to prepare dinner.
