With a loud slap, Zhang Guihua found herself unexpectedly struck, her hand instinctively covering her face as tears welled in her eyes while she looked at her husband.
"You hit me? How dare you?" She could hardly believe that the husband who usually obeyed her every word would resort to violence.
"Shut up and come with me. We need to clear this up," Qi Changsheng dismissed her complaints, driven by a sense of blood ties and, more importantly, his own dignity as a man. He needed to go back and figure things out.
Despite Zhang Guihua's usual assertiveness, she was no match for Qi Changsheng when it came to physical confrontation. In an instant, the couple was grappling with each other, while Qi Ping cried out in an attempt to mediate but found himself utterly helpless.
He truly did not understand how he had come to this point, having initially arrived with his parents in high spirits to settle a score, only to find them embroiled in a fight.
Chen Ruolan shut the courtyard door and secured the latch, thumping her chest as she said, "Is there any trouble brewing here? What if something goes wrong? I hope it doesn’t lead to any fatalities!"
Yu Chunmiao observed her kind-hearted mother-in-law and thought about how complex human beings could be. They genuinely protected their own but also acted out their fears when the situation called for it.
What did it matter? Yu Chunmiao pulled her mother-in-law back into the house, saying as they walked, "As long as she doesn’t cause a scene at home, I still need to go out and gather clams to make some money. Whether there’s trouble or not is up to them to handle."
Evil must be dealt with by those who are evil; it wasn’t that Yu Chunmiao was heartless. What if one day the Qi family couldn’t find Qi Chong? Was it possible that Qi Chong could end up lost in the mountains?
To repay kindness with kindness—how should one repay kindness?
She recalled the horse that had been kicked dead; she had cared for it meticulously every day, keeping it shiny and well-groomed. She cleaned its hooves daily, yet when it mattered most, it had abandoned her.
It was all her fault for not being strict during training when it misbehaved.
Qi Rong looked at his older brother who was staring blankly at the scene of Mother-in-law and Daughter-in-law fighting and asked, "Big Brother, what just happened? Why did they start fighting?"
Qi Chong patted his younger brother's back and replied, "This is called drawing water away from the fire. They came looking for trouble with us, and your sister-in-law just gave them an even bigger problem—so big that they don’t have time to bother with us."
As he spoke, his mind filled with images of Yu Chunmiao’s playful face—quirky and adorable. A string in his heart was plucked, creating a curious sensation.
Zhang Guihua was dragged away by Qi Changsheng; once her cries faded into the distance, Yu Chunmiao and Qi Rong shouldered their baskets.
"Mother, please start brewing the medicine soon and keep an eye on the clams in the backyard. I’ll make bone soup when I get back tonight."
Chen Ruolan responded affirmatively, "Don’t worry; I’ll make sure not a single clam dies."
"I’ll cook dinner tonight; you don’t need to worry about that," Qi Chong added.
Yu Chunmiao smiled warmly and tilted her head playfully, "Then I’ll just wait for dinner tonight." With all the commotion from his family, she had wasted precious time gathering clams but would make up for it now.
Qi Chong nodded with a smile and gently reminded her, "Take your time; don’t wander too far."
As Uncle and Aunt left the house, Chen Ruolan and Qi Chong busied themselves with their own tasks.
Chen Ruolan tended to the clams while brewing medicine and washing clothes.
Qi Chong took the bones and struck them with an axe, ensuring that the marrow would dissolve into the soup. He started a fire and rendered the pork lard he had bought.
Yu Chunmiao was out running errands with his younger brother. Although he walked with a limp, he still did what he could. He hoped his leg would heal quickly; even if he remained disabled, as long as he could manage without crutches, it would make things easier for him. Yet, he couldn't shake the thought that he might be a burden to Yu Chunmiao for the rest of his life. The idea gnawed at him like a hook in his heart, pulling at him intermittently and causing a pang of pain.
