The petite figure tossed her braided hair back with a simple motion, causing Qi Chong to momentarily fixate on her. His heart inexplicably tightened, and he felt his heartbeat skip a beat without knowing why.
"Big Brother, did you hear what I said?" His younger brother's voice pulled him out of his thoughts.
"What did you say?" Qi Chong realized he hadn't heard a single word.
A crow flew overhead as Qi Rong continued, "Sister-in-law asked me to ask you if the court has any regulations regarding sugar production."
Qi Chong spat out the remnants of sweet cane and replied, "The court doesn't allow the surname to produce sugar from sugarcane, nor to plant sugarcane. If we use other materials to make sugar, as long as a family produces less than two pounds a year, it’s no big deal. If we use other materials and manage to produce two pounds in a year, we won’t be imprisoned; however, if discovered, the method will be confiscated by the court, and we will be prohibited from using it again."
In the past, that was how sugarcane was taken away by the court.
Excitedly, Qi Rong rushed to share the news with New Sister-in-law, running a short distance before turning back to kindly close the door. Big Brother didn't like anyone peering into his room, especially New Sister-in-law; he had specifically instructed him to do so.
Qi Chong thought to himself: It’s not necessarily a good thing that my younger brother has such a good memory.
After a simple lunch, Yu Chunmiao had Chen Ruolan help change the water for the clams and apple snails, promising that dinner would wait for her return. She and Qi Rong came back at four-thirty with half a basket of clams.
Yu Chunmiao began washing loquat leaves, taking six or seven pieces and boiling three segments in water. "Mother, do we have honey? And dried tangerine peel?"
Chen Ruolan replied awkwardly, "Yu Chunmiao, we don’t have those things at home. I’m really sorry; you just came in and are already working without even having a piece of candy."
Yu Chunmiao waved her hand at the stove and said, "Mother, it’s not for me; it’s for you. Honey and dried tangerine peel will make it even better."
Looking at the loquat leaves still soaking in water, Chen Ruolan swallowed hard and asked, "Is this really for me? Can I drink it?"
Their youngest son had mentioned at lunch that Yu Chunmiao was going to brew loquat leaf tea for her, which had worried her all afternoon. The test was upon her.
Since eating sweet cane, Qi Rong had trusted New Sister-in-law a bit more. He chimed in, "Once it's brewed, I'll drink it first. If I'm fine, then Mother can have some."
Yu Chunmiao ruffled his hair and said, "No need for you; I’ll drink it."
When the loquat leaf tea was ready, Yu Chunmiao drank half a bowl and poured another bowl for Chen Ruolan. "Drink up; really, it’s fine. I wouldn’t dare give you anything if I wasn’t sure."
Chen Ruolan thought that even if it had no effect, drinking it wouldn't kill her. She pinched her nose and downed a bowl in one go, just like taking medicine. It wasn't bitter; her mouth was filled with the fragrant aroma of Loquat Leaves. After finishing, the itchiness that made her want to cough eased a bit.
Not bad, she felt much more comfortable in her throat.
Qi Rong, upon hearing this, hurriedly ran to his elder brother's room to report. He didn't even enter the room but opened the door and leaned in halfway, saying, "The Loquat Leaves water has been drunk; she said her throat feels better."
He quickly dropped the message and closed the door behind him as he left.
