Yu Chunmiao held a Chicken Foot, laughing as she gnawed on it. Mother and Son exchanged a smile; this Xin Yuan didn’t seem as foolish as the rumors suggested, showing some consideration for the younger ones.
There were only eight wild vegetables, and Qi Rong stopped after eating two, while Chen Ruolan had one and didn’t take any more. When Yu Chunmiao finished her second, Chen Ruolan offered her another.
Qi Rong carried two Wo Wo and a bowl of chicken soup to bring to his elder brother. Yu Chunmiao quickly placed the Wo Wo Tou from her plate onto his. It was instinctive; the men in the family should eat more. She had eaten Wo Wo Tou before, but only had two meals a day, with just one piece each time. Eating like this today made her quite satisfied.
Qi Rong didn’t refuse; he knew well how much his elder brother could eat.
Yu Chunmiao rushed to wash the dishes. After all, it was her first day in their home, and she couldn’t take advantage of her In-Laws’ kindness to be lazy. Crossing over into a Good Family was a stroke of luck for both herself and them.
Seeing her quick movements, Chen Ruolan recognized that she was used to this and didn’t stop her. The reason she bought Yu Chunmiao was to find someone to take care of her three brothers, especially since her own health wouldn’t hold out much longer.
Excitedly, Qi Rong brought the food to his brother. “Brother, our New Sister-in-law is great! She gave me the chicken leg and is eating Chicken Foot herself. She even let you have the Wo Wo Tou; otherwise, you’d only have two today.”
He had already decided that the New Sister-in-law was a good person; whether she was foolish or not remained to be seen.
Qi Chong handed the chicken leg to his younger brother, saying, “Take it and eat; this thing gets stuck in your teeth easily.” At twenty years old, he felt there was no reason to compete with his brother for a chicken leg.
He felt indifferent about the wife they had bought. His role model was his father, who loved his mother sincerely and cherished her deeply. He didn’t want a blind marriage.
Qi Rong still seemed unsatisfied after eating; he licked his lips and said, “I’m full; you eat. Otherwise, you’ll be hungry again tonight.” The Big Chicken Leg was shoved into Qi Rong’s mouth; it tasted so good that he devoured it without hesitation.
After finishing two Wo Wo Tou, Qi Chong couldn’t eat anymore as a sharp pain shot through his injured calf.
Noticing him grimacing in pain while supporting his injured leg, Qi Rong hurried outside. “Mother! Big Brother is in pain again; he can’t even eat!”
He knew that if Big Brother couldn’t eat, it must be serious.
Chen Ruolan rushed into Qi Chong’s room to check on him and saw him expressionless while eating. She smacked her younger son on the head and scolded, “What nonsense are you talking about? You’re overreacting for no reason!”
Qi Rong felt wronged but seeing Big Brother seemingly okay made him think that his grievances were trivial.
Qi Chong endured the pain and pretended to be calm while eating and drinking. “I just bumped into something by accident; it’s nothing. Don’t make such a fuss about it.”
What could pain do? Going to see a doctor would cost at least thirty taels for Bone Setting and Healing. Their family didn’t have that much silver; he just needed to endure it without worrying his mother.
Sitting across from her eldest son, Chen Ruolan said earnestly, “I think this Yu Chunmiao girl is quite good; why don’t we go meet her?”
Qi Chong shook his head in silence.
Tears streamed down Chen Ruolan's face. Though she was simple-minded, she could cook and do laundry. If their mother were no longer around, at least there would be a woman to take care of the three brothers.
Qi Chong lowered his head, refusing to look at his mother. With a hint of defiance in his voice, he said, "I can do the cooking and laundry myself. I can take care of my younger brother without needing someone from outside. Mother will be fine; the doctor said so. As long as we stay calm, she will get better slowly."
Chen Ruolan pounded her chest, taking a deep breath as she wiped her nose. "Your father and I have failed you; we've delayed your marriage. We don’t know how much longer we’ll have to endure this poverty. Your second brother is already sixteen; we’ve already delayed one of you, we can't afford to delay another."
Life had been decent until three years ago when an accident caused Qi Fu to be bitten by a venomous snake. Though his life was saved, he required constant medicine. Originally, Qi Chong was capable enough not to fall behind the Guang Family, but then Chen Ruolan fell ill as well.
The family sold their land, and Qi Chong hunted every day in the mountains, yet he still couldn't keep his father alive. A year ago, their father passed away.
Their mother's illness worsened; Qi Chong's daily presence in the mountains was not enough to cure her, and she continued to cough every day.
Two months ago, Qi Chong's leg was broken by a wild boar, completely cutting off their family's source of income.
No matter what, we cannot afford to be sick!
