The yard was quite large, situated in a secluded valley, away from the village. Future Mother-in-law Chen Ruolan stood waiting in the yard, accompanied by a boy around ten years old, the youngest son of the Qi Family, Qi Rong. Behind them were three houses, their walls uneven and many patches of mud had already fallen away. 0

Yu Daman introduced his daughter with a beaming smile: "In-laws, I've brought her here. See? I told you she’s beautiful, just like her mother. She’s not very talkative and won’t dare to argue with you; if you say one thing, she won’t say two." 0

Yu Chunmiao observed her future mother-in-law. Approaching forty, Chen Ruolan had a sallow complexion and a thin frame, clearly indicating malnutrition. Her hair seemed to have been deliberately styled, with a smooth bun held up by an old orchid wooden hairpin. 0

If she had better living conditions, she might have been considered a beauty. 0

Yu Chunmiao resolved that if her new mother-in-law turned out to be as malicious as her sister-in-law, she would show her what a modern independent woman was capable of before escaping. 0

Chen Ruolan also scrutinized her but only glanced at Yu Daman before saying, "The meal is ready; please stay for lunch." Her voice was somewhat gentle, accompanied by a smile. As soon as she finished speaking, she turned away and coughed softly into her hand. 0

Yu Daman waved his hand repeatedly, saying impatiently, "If you’re satisfied, let’s finalize the Selling Contract so I can leave; I really have something urgent." He deliberately stepped back two paces from Chen Ruolan, appearing somewhat disdainful. 0

What urgency could he possibly have? Wasn’t he just going to gamble in town? Yu Chunmiao silently wished he would lose everything and end up with nothing left to wear. 0

Chen Ruolan led them into the Hall, holding Qi Rong's hand while he turned his head to sneak glances at Yu Chunmiao. 0

Yu Chunmiao quickened her pace and stuck out her tongue at him over Yu Daman's shoulder, making a funny face. Qi Rong immediately turned away, leaving behind an expression of shock. 0

Once they reached the Hall and sat down, Chen Ruolan went to pour water. Yu Daman impatiently urged her on: "No need to fuss; hurry up, I really have something urgent." 0

Chen Ruolan turned and entered the room while Yu Chunmiao stood behind the Gambling Old Man, waiting for Qi Rong's gaze to meet hers. However, he couldn't help but steal another glance at Yu Chunmiao. Seizing the opportunity, she made another funny face. This time Qi Rong dashed into another room and didn’t come out again. 0

Yu Chunmiao thought that this boy was easily scared; two funny faces had sent him running away. Ancient people seemed more shy and playful. 0

After a short while, Chen Ruolan emerged from the room holding a wooden box. Yu Daman’s eyes lit up as he stared at it. 0

Chen Ruolan opened the box and took out several pieces of silver coins along with a small copper scale. "In-laws, look here; this is two taels and nine qian eight fen." 0

Yu Daman covered his nose and examined the scale carefully before nodding in approval. 0

Chen Ruolan then took out two strings of copper coins, each containing ten coins. Yu Daman counted them seriously and stuffed both the copper coins and silver pieces into his pocket. 0

"Father is leaving now; you Qi Family must live well, be filial to your mother-in-law, and take care of things," Yu Daman pretended to give some advice. 0

Yu Chunmiao didn’t want to engage with him and remained silent. 0

The Gambler left behind a Selling Contract as he departed. Yu Chunmiao looked at the imprints of their hands side by side on it. It was precisely because she was unwilling to press her handprint that she had received a blow to the head. 0

Chen Ruolan pulled Yu Chunmiao down onto a stool with a kind expression and said, "Your name is Yu Chunmiao; it’s truly lovely. I am your mother-in-law; you can call me ‘Mother’." 0

Saying this, she turned away and began to cough again; it seemed she was unwell. After finishing her coughing fit, she continued, "If you don't mind, you can call me 'Grandmother' or 'Aunt,' either is fine." 0
