The second year of university had begun.
On the long bus ride back to school, Hu Ruoyun shared the rumors about Yao Wei with Mao Na, who was left speechless for a moment. After a while, she finally managed to respond, “What about Li Shengnan? She’s about to have a baby!”
Hu Ruoyun replied, “Right now, there’s no good solution. One option is to hope that Yao Wei realizes his mistakes, but given the current situation, that seems unlikely. On the other hand, with Li Shengnan in this condition, it’s best not to provoke her…”
Mao Na fell silent again, and after a long pause, she angrily said, “That pretty boy has bad intentions! What makes him think Li Shengnan isn’t good enough for him?”
When they arrived in Jiangcheng, Mao Na still seemed troubled. Hu Ruoyun accompanied her to the bus stop and asked dreamily, “You’re not like Yao Wei too, are you?”
Hu Ruoyun gently pushed her onto the bus and followed her inside. They got off at the Jiangbei Postal and Telecommunications School. He held her hand as they stepped down together and walked her to the dormitory building before saying, “You go on up; I’ll head back! As I said before, ‘You Never Leave, I Will Never Abandon!’”
Mao Na felt relieved and turned around with a light step as she headed upstairs.
Back at Jiangbei University, the other four had already returned to their dorm. Cui Shuigen and Liu Jiawang had noticeably tanned skin from working on the farm during their time at home.
The five of them went to the cafeteria for lunch. Cui Shuigen couldn’t hide his excitement: “Feng Yun came home with me! My parents were so happy…”
In the afternoon, everyone prepared for classes starting the next day.
That evening, Cui Shuigen eagerly took Hu Ruoyun for a walk on the playground and detailed his trip home with Feng Yun: “Brother San, you’ve helped me a lot this year. I’ve paid off my loans, and my family no longer feels pressured because of my studies… Feng Yun came home with me. At first, I was worried she’d think we were poor, but she quietly told me that her family is even worse off than mine.
She’s the eldest child; her parents cultivate less than three acres of mountainous land. They live in a deeply impoverished county, and her village is in a remote mountain area. Since she started university, life at home has become even tougher; both her younger brothers wear tattered clothes!
She thanked me for taking her to work-study programs and said she’s looking forward to graduating quickly so she can find a job and improve her family’s situation.”
Perhaps this is the most realistic wish of every child coming from a poor family.
On the first Sunday after classes resumed, Hu Ruoyun called Lai Wen's office from the dormitory to say he would take Mao Na out to dinner with Lai Wen the next day. Lai Wen was busy borrowing an interview machine and introducing her husband while helping Annan's side with various difficulties.
At the request of County Chief Mao and others, along with Hu Ruoyun's personal friendship, he brought Lai Wen a bunch of goodies: vacuum-packed Daokou Roast Chicken, Lao Miao Beef, Eternity Mutton Hot Pot, and even a high-quality ice wine for her husband.
Lai Wen declined politely: “I can’t do it today; an old classmate from abroad just returned. I need to spend time with her!”
But Hu Ruoyun couldn’t wait; although everything was vacuum-packed, it was hot outside this season, and he worried it might spoil if left too long. He insisted, “ sister Lai, give me ten minutes; I just want to see you!”
After thinking for a moment, Lai Wen replied, “How about this? Tonight my husband and I are taking my classmate out for dinner at Xi Wangfu Holiday Hotel. You and Mao Na can join us; we have a private room on the second floor.”
Hu Ruoyun felt uneasy about intruding on their family gathering but realized he had no choice since he had already agreed. He decided in his heart that he would leave the food at the hotel front desk for them to pick up without going upstairs himself with Mao Na.
