Lin Xiao opened the microphone and said, "Hello everyone, I am Lin Xiao. It is a great honor to be here in Gengxu Town, alongside all of you. I hope that in the future, under the leadership of the County Committee, the County Government, and Secretary Li, we can achieve even better results."
It was a typical opening, filled with empty words. Lin Xiao thought to herself that at this point, it was pointless to embellish; without genuine effort, no one would be convinced.
"Secretary Li, please continue. I am not yet familiar with Gengxu Town; let’s all learn together," she added before turning off the microphone.
Li Hongxin then asked each town head to report on their recent work and unleashed a torrent of criticism on the village secretaries involved. As he smoked and scolded, the room filled with smoke, creating a hazy atmosphere.
Sitting next to Li Hongxin, Lin Xiao found herself directly in the line of fire; her ears were not spared from the barrage of insults. The various curses echoed loudly throughout the room. At first, Li Hongxin held back a bit knowing Lin Xiao was present, but as time went on and his temper flared, he completely let loose.
"Chengjia Village, have you lost your mind? How can you not understand this?" he shouted.
The meeting dragged on until noon, with Li Hongxin spending half the time berating others.
"Lin Town Head," he said, "we’ll arrange a welcome dinner for you at Cui Ping Grand Hotel tonight. Please invite Secretary Li to join us."
After the meeting adjourned, Li Hongxin smiled warmly. "Secretary Li, let's forget about the welcome dinner; I’ve been working here for more than just a day or two. When Li Hao is free, my husband and I will treat you."
Lin Xiao thought to herself that perhaps she should push Li Hao away. While this would benefit her in some ways, it was more about ensuring she would always live under his shadow.
In the afternoon, several Deputy Town Heads came by in turns to report their work to Lin Xiao. She listened attentively but often found that their reports lacked substance. Although she had previously worked with Yu Rao, it had been five years since then and many changes had occurred.
She remembered Li Hao’s advice: speak less and listen more.
As it neared the end of the workday, Meng Kai knocked on the door and entered with a document and a notebook in hand.
Lin Town Head waved goodbye to Meng Kai, unable to suppress a smile. Xiao Meng—no, Meng Town Head.
Meng Kai grinned as he placed several documents in front of Lin Xiao. "Lin Town Head, these are the plans for rural revitalization and tourism development in Gengxu Town over the past two years. This is the key work for Gengwei Town this year."
All the documents were exactly what Lin Xiao needed. "I remember you were the Deputy Township Head in another village before, right?" Lin Xiao recalled seeing Meng Kai's posts about local work dynamics on social media.
"I just transferred to Gengxu Town half a month ago," Meng Kai said with a smile as he took a seat.
Lin Xiao thought about it; half a month ago was when she confirmed her temporary position in Yurou County. The timing was uncanny.
The morning meeting passed quickly, and by afternoon, listening to a few township heads discuss their responsibilities, the day was nearly over.
In the evening, Li Hao took Lin Xiao, Wang Mei, and Tian Tian out for dinner.
When Tian Tian spotted Lin Xiao from a distance, she joyfully danced with excitement. Lin Xiao quickened her pace to take the child from Wang Mei's arms, but Tian Tian burst into tears instead.
After ordering their meals, Li Hao noticed his daughter crying in Wang Mei's embrace. "What's wrong with Tian Tian?"
"She doesn't want me to hold her," Lin Xiao said, sounding quite aggrieved.
"No, it's probably because you smell too much like smoke," Li Hao replied. "Tian Tian doesn't like it."
Ever since Lin Xiao developed an aversion to smoke during her pregnancy, Li Hao had quit smoking. However, as soon as he entered the room, he caught a whiff of cheap cigarette smoke.
Lin Xiao was aware of the smell on herself; it made her uncomfortable too, so it was understandable that Tian Tian didn't like it.
