The maternity leave was over, and Lin Xiao was returning to work.
"I'll drive you to the office," Li Hao said as he picked up the keys from the entrance and followed Lin Xiao out.
"It's so close; I can walk there in ten minutes," Lin Xiao thought he was going to drive her.
"I'll walk with you," Li Hao replied, taking the bag from her hand and holding her hand as they headed outside.
Professor Sun glanced at the entrance before continuing to play with his granddaughter.
Wang Mei teased, "Xiao Xiao, you should take him out for a stroll. Tian Tian takes after her dad; she needs you to take her out every day."
Lin Xiao noticed Li Hao's calm expression and felt a slight stir in her heart as he half-embraced her from behind while they exited the house.
As they took the elevator down, Lin Xiao asked with some concern, "Is everything really over?"
"It is over; I just want to be with you," Li Hao replied, not realizing that his words had caused Lin Xiao to worry.
Lin Xiao blushed at Li Hao's sudden sweet words, feeling shy.
Li Hao was captivated, beginning to understand why ancient emperors kept their favorites hidden away. But alas, he could never bear to confine Lin Xiao; she was like a galloping steed on the grasslands, free in her own world.
Once they exited the neighborhood, Lin Xiao took back her bag from him; it felt somewhat awkward for him to be holding a woman's purse.
When they reached the corner of their workplace, Lin Xiao released Li Hao's hand and said, "You can go back now."
Li Hao returned home.
Professor Sun sat on the sofa, looking at him seriously. "I know you feel guilty about Lin Xiao. Have you considered that she might not want you to feel this way forever?"
Her tone was calm, but if one listened closely, they could sense her concern.
Ever since Lin Xiao had a difficult delivery, Li Hao had been by Xiang Tian's side for hours without leaving her.
Li Hao had thought about it, but he couldn't control himself.
The image of Lin Xiao's pale and fragile appearance after giving birth lingered in his mind, sending chills through him.
"Find something to do," Professor Sun advised gently. "Lin Xiao doesn't like men who are unskilled."
Li Hao detected a hint of disdain in his mother's calm tone.
Since Tian Tian arrived, he could feel his mother becoming more lively and warm-hearted again, slowly thawing the coldness that had settled in his heart after Li Bo Mountain's departure.
"Mom, don't worry. Lin Xiao will take care of me, and you can take care of Tian Tian," he said with a reassuring smile.
Professor Sun looked at his son in astonishment, unable to believe the words that had just come out of his mouth. It had been years since he had heard his son tell a joke.
"Mom, we need to look forward. Let the past be the past. Look at me, I have Lin Xiao now, and you have Tian Tian," Li Hao said, gazing at Lin Qi, whose eyes were glistening with tears.
Wang Mei held the child in her arms, listening to the conversation between the two.
"Yes, we should look ahead; that's where hope lies," she agreed.
To Lin Xiao, she was still just a child. Professor Sun returned to his usual calm demeanor.
"Don't worry, Mom. I won't really let you and Tian Tian take care of me," Li Hao said seriously.
On his first day at work, Lin Xiao saw a notice on the bulletin board in the office building. The Provincial Organization Department was dispatching a group of mid-level officials to work in the Township for practical training. There were many conditions, but the hard requirements were just two: not yet a year old and having served as a mid-level official for two years.
Lin Xiao felt a stir of excitement; she was part of the Provincial Organization Department and was aware of this opportunity. Working in the Township would be much tougher than at the provincial level, but it was a chance. After two years, if all went well, she could return and be promoted to deputy director.
She couldn't stop thinking about it all day long. Even during dinner and while playing with the child at home, her mind wandered elsewhere.
That night, as she lay in bed, Lin Xiao turned restlessly in Li Hao's arms.
