On Tuesday afternoon, Lin Xiao took a leave of absence and went to the hospital alone. The doctor drew her blood and confirmed that she was pregnant. Sitting on a bench in the hospital, she marveled at the miracle of life.
When she called Lin Mu, her mother was working in the fields. She asked if her mother could come to the provincial capital to keep her company.
Lin Mu replied that she was married now and didn’t have a home to stay at with her daughter anymore; they would see each other again when Lin Xiao held her wedding.
Lin Xiao had anticipated that Lin Mu wouldn’t want to come, but hearing it directly still saddened her. Wasn’t she her daughter?
The Provincial Women and Children’s Hospital was just one stop away from Xiangtian University, so Lin Xiao took a cab to find Professor Sun.
Professor Sun had just finished class and was surprised to see Lin Xiao waiting at the classroom door alone.
“Mom, I’m pregnant,” Lin Xiao said nervously upon seeing Professor Sun.
Professor Sun maintained her usual calm demeanor.
“Li Hao didn’t come with you?” she asked, surprised that Lin Xiao had come by herself.
“Li Hao is going to Tibet; I didn’t tell him,” Lin Xiao guessed that her mother-in-law must have known about this too.
Upon hearing this, Professor Sun looked at Lin Xiao with understanding; it was clear that Lin Xiao had no one else in the provincial capital.
“Let’s go; I’ll take you out for a meal,” Professor Sun said. She rarely cooked for herself and usually ate at the cafeteria. This time, she took Lin Xiao to a private restaurant.
During their meal, Professor Sun remained calm and asked if Lin Xiao was experiencing any pregnancy symptoms while reminding her of some precautions.
Lin Xiao understood her mother-in-law’s temperament; at this moment, she simply wanted someone by her side.
Ten days later, on the weekend, when Li Hao returned home from Yurou County after resigning, he found Lin Xiao bent over the sink, vomiting.
At first, Lin Xiao thought she wasn't pregnant, but now she realized it was just too early to tell. Over the past few days, she had been violently nauseous. Just a moment ago, when she opened the fridge and caught a whiff of the meat floss bread, it triggered another wave of sickness, and she felt like she might throw up her bile.
Li Hao saw Lin Xiao retching continuously and was alarmed. "What's wrong? We need to get to the hospital," he said as he rushed over to support her.
As Lin Xiao caught a whiff of the smoke on Li Hao, her nausea intensified. She braced herself against the sink with one hand while pushing him away with the other.
When Li Hao heard Lin Xiao say she was pregnant, he felt overjoyed, like a fool. Just as he was about to embrace her, she started throwing up again.
He thought to himself that no wonder people say men smell bad; he really did stink. In that moment, he resolved to quit smoking.
