You are an outsider and may not know our customs. Here, when a daughter gets married, the groom's family is required to pay a bride price. The daughter of Lin Lao San next door received ten thousand as her bride price. Lin Mu's words were shocking, and Lin Xiao had completely overlooked this point in her calculations.
Lin Xiao felt somewhat embarrassed. She had intended to give all her savings to Lin Mu, but she hadn't expected her mother to bring it up without consulting her first.
"Mom, Li Hao just bought a house and a car, so he doesn't have much money. But he can definitely manage ten thousand for the bride price," Lin Xiao quickly interjected, fearing her mother would say something even more outrageous.
"Mom, my brother-in-law has already given me the bride price." Lin Xiao took out her silver card from her pocket and placed it on the table, hoping to prevent any further comments.
"Your sister can't be compared to Lin Lao San's daughter. Your sister is a university student and looks better than her. How can she be the same?" Lin Mu insisted, relentless in her remarks.
"Mom, let me finish. The amount is ten thousand; my brother-in-law really doesn't have any more money left. The girls from the provincial capital don’t even ask for that much, I swear." Lin Xiao understood that the money was meant for him anyway, and how much was actually inside didn’t matter at all.
Li Hao recognized Lin Mu's preference for sons; he had noticed it during their visit to the police station. He hadn’t expected it would put Lin Xiao in such an awkward position.
If it weren't for Lin Xiao's dignity, he would have wanted to criticize her. Thankfully, Lin Xiao was a good younger sister.
Lin Mu was quite satisfied upon hearing that ten thousand had been given as the bride price.
That night, they slept in the room where Lin Xiao usually slept. It didn’t smell musty; the room was warm and clean.
Lin Xiao took out a red jewelry box from her bag, inside which lay an old gold bracelet she intended to give to Lin Mu as a gift. But at that moment, she hesitated; she remembered her mother’s preferences and wishes. Yet her mother had never known what she truly wanted.
Li Hao could tell that Lin Xiao was feeling down and felt a pang of sympathy in his heart.
Lin Xiao nodded slightly in his embrace.
"Has it always been like this?" he asked gently.
She nodded again.
"What do you want? Just tell me; you don’t need to feel awkward about it."
Li Hao thought that as far as the bride price was concerned, he should pay it without making Lin Xiao feel like she was being sold off.
"My mom wants the money not for herself but for Lin Xiao," she explained, handing him a text message from Lin Mu.
Li Hao thought about it; all his money was meant for his wife anyway. Ten thousand didn’t matter much to him. "Don’t cry anymore; just sleep," he said softly.
Lin Xiao couldn’t fall asleep; it had been a long time since they had seen each other after New Year’s, so she nestled closer to him.
Li Hao was fully aware of her little gestures.
The soundproofing here is poor.
Lin Xiao noticed that as the two of them moved, they made creaking noises.
"Come down," Li Hao said, having wanted to try this move for a long time, and today he finally had the chance.
Lin Xiao leaned against the wall, feeling a bit shy.
Li Hao, feeling a pang of sympathy for Lin Xiao, embraced her from the front.
Lin Xiao almost cried out and bit down on his shoulder blade.
The countryside was hard to manage, so Li Hao simply helped her clean up a bit before they both went to sleep.
With Li Hao by her side, Lin Xiao felt that the burdens she carried in her heart seemed to fade away, no longer piercing her soul as they once did.
