Afterward, Li Hao returned to Yurou County and began a new round of busy work. They had attracted an international hotel chain, and if this hotel opened, Yurou County would become the first county in Changlin City to have foreign investment.
The customs of Yurou County were quite similar to those of the country, and the arrival of a foreign hotel could leverage the advantages of the Thai-Myanmar region to develop international tourism, taking the tourism industry to a new level.
The Investment Promotion meeting was scheduled at the Pearl Agate Hall on the second floor of Hengli Grand Hotel. To show its importance, Li Hao arrived early with the director of the tourism bureau and personnel from the foreign affairs office.
When guests were guided in by the waitstaff, a foreign man entered with a group of people. Li Hao quickly greeted each one with a handshake. It had been a long time since he had seen her, and he could hardly believe his eyes and ears; hadn’t she said she would never return?
“Hello.” Despite the tumultuous feelings inside him, Li Hao maintained his composure and greeted her with a smile.
The project’s general agent was Mike from the United States, while Xue was responsible for the domestic sector. After Mike's inspection, Xue would handle the specific project coordination.
After the Investment Promotion meeting concluded, Li Hao invited them to dinner together. Mike was well-versed in Chinese culture and spoke Mandarin quite well, allowing for smooth communication. Coincidentally, Li Hao was an expert in this area, and they hit it off.
The director of the tourism bureau was an elegant woman named Zhu Man, who also took the initiative to engage with Xue. She introduced Yurou County's economic development and tourism positioning.
As they chatted, Zhu Man found it interesting that Xue seemed very interested in Li Shuji, as their conversation often circled back to Li Hao.
“Do you know our Secretary?” Zhu Man thought it would be great if there were some prior acquaintance; it seemed they had come prepared.
“Yes, we’ve known each other for over ten years,” Xue replied with a smile, glancing at Li Hao as she spoke.
Li Hao sat at the head of the table; Mike was on his left and Xue on his right, with Zhu Man beside Xue. Thus, they were seated closely on both sides.
Although Li Hao was conversing with Mike, he could clearly hear everything Xue said. When it was his turn to toast, he raised his glass and smiled, saying, “To you, Director Zhu. Welcome to our Yu Rao.”
Xue held her glass properly, her eyes sparkling playfully as she teased him, “Why do you sound so distant?”
Zhu Man observed from the side and felt certain that their relationship was anything but simple; she pondered over this matter in her mind.
Li Hao smiled without responding to her remark and briefly introduced the situation in Yu Rao. If possible, he thought he might never want to see Xue again in his lifetime.
As Xue raised her glass to drink, Li Hao gently took the drink from her hand and said, “Why don’t you just have water?”
Xue smiled even more brightly; he still remembered that she was allergic to alcohol.
At nine in the evening, Li Hao and Zhu Man escorted their guest to the elevator before leaving.
"Is the Secretary an old acquaintance of yours?" Zhu Man asked casually, as if making small talk.
"She's a junior from university; I haven't seen her in ages." Just as Li Hao finished speaking, and before he could step out of the hotel, his phone rang.
Seeing an unfamiliar number from out of town, he hung up. But the call came through again almost immediately, prompting him to answer.
"Li Hao, it's Xue. Have you left?" Her voice had matured over the years, losing its previous liveliness but gaining a soft yet firm tone. "I want to talk to you."
"It's late; let's discuss it tomorrow."
"Don't you want to know how I've been doing abroad?" Xue's gentle voice carried a hint of pleading and grievance.
"Xue, we broke up. Does it even matter what you have to say?" Li Hao replied before hanging up the phone.
Xue called again; she was always like this—unyielding when it came to doing what she wanted.
With a sigh of resignation, Li Hao answered once more. "You can reach me through WeChat; I'll send you some pictures."
