A deep voice sent a shiver through Lin Xiao, causing her face to flush uncontrollably. Li Hao noticed the crimson hue on her ears and felt a warm sensation in his heart; she looked so shy.
"Then I'll take a shower and change my clothes," Lin Xiao said, aware of Li Hao's mild cleanliness obsession. After spending a day outside, she hesitated to lie down on the bed, fearing he might mind.
"It's not that troublesome; this way is also quite appealing," Li Hao remarked, his words deliberately low, making Lin Xiao blush even more. She pulled her hand away from him and shot him a glare, but unfortunately for her, it only added to the charm in his eyes.
After taking her time in the shower and changing into a clean set of workout clothes, Lin Xiao knocked on Li Hao's door. He was on the phone when she entered. She hesitated for a moment, ready to retreat to her room, but he waved her over, and she obediently sat by his bed.
From the relaxed tone of his conversation, it seemed he wasn't on a work call. "Si Ningyuan knows I got injured and wants to come see me, but I turned her down." Upon noticing Lin Xiao's entrance, Li Hao wrapped up the call after just a couple of sentences.
Mentioning Si Ningyuan reminded both of them of the alluring woman, Wang Wenya. "Wang Wenya was from our childhood neighborhood; she and Si Ningyuan are quite similar—always up to mischief," Li Hao said, wanting to clarify things for Lin Xiao.
"Uh-huh."
"Not jealous?" he teased, perhaps due to lying around for too long and feeling bored; he couldn't resist teasing her. With his remaining hand, he gently ruffled her freshly washed hair, enjoying its soft texture.
"If I had taken the elevator down with Si Ningyuan back then, would you have gotten together with her?" Lin Xiao pondered for ten seconds before voicing her concern. Even though she knew he would likely say no, she wanted to hear him say it.
Li Hao chuckled softly. He initially thought about teasing her with "What do you think?" but seeing her serious expression made him drop the playful attitude. "No way; I'm not that careless."
Lin Xiao felt a surge of happiness as she let him play with her hair.
A week later, Xiao Meng said, "This weekend when you come back, I'll handle things regarding Li Hao."
"Really? Director Lin?" Meng Kai was a bit excited, waiting to go home to shoot the wedding photos. Was it the Secretary who said that?
"No, it was me. I'll talk to Li Hao in a bit." Lin Xiao heard Meng Kai hiding in the study, talking on the phone, and the girl on the other end sounded somewhat exasperated.
Li Hao, who was in the room, heard Lin Xiao's words. He liked hearing her say his name. When Lin Xiao came in, he teased, "You're already trying to win over my secretary."
"It's been a while since he came here; he should go home and check on things. Don't you think?"
Li Hao curled his finger playfully. "Who will take care of me this weekend?"
"I will. Don't worry," Lin Xiao replied, knowing that Li Hao had limited mobility and felt comfortable around him.
After Meng Kai left, Li Hao didn't handle any documents. Sometimes he found himself idly passing time, which was why he had Meng Kai help him jot down some work ideas.
Now that Meng Kai was gone, he could finally enjoy his weekend.
Xiao Meng returned from the weekend and handed Li Hao's meal card to Lin Xiao. "Director Lin, you can use this card at Zhuye Pavilion to buy food. If you don't want to order yourself, you can have them deliver it."
Lin Xiao took the card from her hand; it was Li Hao's meal card, and she couldn't help but feel a pang of regret over spending money.
"How about we skip takeout? I'll cook for you," Lin Xiao suggested to Li Hao.
"You can cook?" Li Hao was surprised; very few girls he knew could cook, including his mother.
"There’s no food from Zhuye Pavilion."
"How can it be the same? Eating your cooking would be a great honor."
Lin Xiao thought to herself, "Just keep flattering me."
Lin Xiao's cooking skills were quite good. For lunch, she made corn and pork rib soup, stir-fried cabbage with vinegar, and braised beef with tomatoes.
She varied the meals each time to provide him with nutritious dishes: stewed ribs, pigeon soup, fish soup, chicken stew, sweet and sour ribs, boiled fish with soft tofu...
Li Hao felt his belly starting to grow; one day he decided not to skip lunch anymore since Lin Xiao was eating at the cafeteria at work.
Another month passed, and Li Hao could basically walk again. He decided it was time to return to Yu Rao.
That night after having his stitches removed, Li Hao asked her if she wanted to sleep together, assuring her it would be purely for sleeping.
Lin Xiao struggled until midnight before secretly crawling into Li Hao's bed.
Li Hao indeed only held her while sleeping; many of his injuries hadn't fully healed yet, so he couldn't engage in any strenuous activity.
Holding her close made Li Hao feel very content. This month of living together made him increasingly realize how well-suited Lin Xiao was for him.
She always knew how to meet his needs in a timely manner, taking his feelings into consideration. At home, she gave him a sense of belonging.
After Li Hao returned to Yu Rao this time, Lin Xiao called him every day, reminding him not to drink. Li Hao felt quite satisfied with the care he received.
Meng Kai was undoubtedly a capable secretary. Li Hao instructed him to inform Lin Xiao about his work updates regularly and irregularly after he finished working at night, to prevent her from worrying about him.
