After several inquiries, it became clear that Lin Xiao was highly capable at work and would likely retire as a senior official at least at the department level. Little did Lin Xiao know that she had already put on quite a show in front of Director Wang.
"Zhu, thank you. During the Spring Festival, a friend introduced me to someone, and we're still in talks, so I can't go on any more blind dates," Lin Xiao expressed her regret and declined the offer.
"Have you confirmed your relationship?" Zhu pressed on.
"Not really, we've only known each other for a month." Lin Xiao was worried that Zhu would continue to pry. It was like one lie leading to another, which could become troublesome.
Zhu continued to chat with Lin Xiao, implying that Director Wang's family was well-off and that his son was a good match. If she pursued this relationship, the pressure would be much less.
As Lin Xiao listened, she began to understand that this wasn't just Director Wang casting a wide net; he had likely done some background checks on her. This feeling was rather unpleasant, but she merely smiled and said nothing.
After their conversation, Zhu left. This matter was closed for Lin Xiao. Back when she was in Yurou County, there had been others who tried to set her up, but she had turned them down without further consideration.
A little over a month later on a weekend...
"Where are you?"
When Lin Xiao checked her phone after class, she noticed a text from Li Hao sent half an hour ago. She jumped in surprise; Li Hao hated it when subordinates didn’t respond promptly.
Lin Xiao stepped into a corner of the classroom to take the call. "Sorry, I was in class and didn’t see my phone."
Just as she was about to call Li Shuji by name, she remembered he was now her boyfriend and hesitated, skipping over the name entirely.
"Where are you having class?" Li Hao asked as soon as he got through.
"At Xiangtian University’s main campus."
Li Hao inquired about what time she finished class and said he would pick her up afterward before hanging up abruptly as usual.
During her subsequent classes, Lin Xiao felt increasingly anxious and completely out of focus; her mind kept drifting back to the feeling of their handshake when they parted ways that day.
As class neared its end, she remembered her prior commitment with Lin Xiao to have dinner together but could only push it off by saying she had to work late.
When Lin Xiao arrived at the school gate, she spotted Li Hao’s car and felt her heart race nervously.
"What class were you in?" Li Hao asked, noticing Lin Xiao dressed in sportswear with a heavy backpack, looking somewhat surprised.
As a part-time graduate student, Lin Xiao felt a surge of joy at having been accepted into the program last year, just as the new semester began. However, standing in front of a PhD candidate made her feel somewhat insignificant.
Li Hao thought to himself that this was a good opportunity; it allowed him to manage his time effectively. On the way, he habitually led the conversation with questions about who her advisor was and what subjects she would be studying, as well as the format of classes for part-time students.
As they discussed these topics, Lin Xiao quickly opened up and shared an overview of her experience as a part-time graduate student.
"Why don’t you ask me how I’ve been doing?" Li Hao countered after inquiring about Lin Xiao's recent situation.
"I already know," Lin Xiao replied with a smile. "Your work updates are available on your official website. It's a habit I've developed over the years to spend half an hour each day catching up on the news."
Li Hao chuckled.
His little secretary was indeed attentive to him, and dating someone smart had its perks—it made things much easier.
