Zhao Chenghua deliberately engaged in small talk with himself, finding comfort in the casual exchange, feeling like he was part of today’s gathering. After a round of card games, everyone took their seats.
The waiter opened the liquor and began pouring white wine into each person's small jug. When it came to Lin Xiao, she gently waved her hand to indicate that she did not want any.
"Little Junior Sister, it's New Year's, how can you not drink?" Chen Liewei said with his usual playful demeanor, unable to resist chatting when he saw a beautiful woman.
Lin Xiao hesitated and replied, "I’m here to serve my seniors; you go ahead and drink."
"You’re the only one at this table not drinking; that won’t do," Chen Liewei thought. He didn’t necessarily want Lin Xiao to get drunk; he just wanted to lighten the mood a bit.
After saying this, Lin Xiao looked at Hua Jie for help, her clear eyes revealing a hint of quiet distress.
Li Hao had never seen this side of Lin Xiao before. During social events, whether she wanted to or not, she always handled herself with composure and had never sought his assistance. In contrast, he realized how much Lin Xiao trusted her previous superior.
"Let Lin Xiao skip the drinking; she’ll drive me back to the hotel later," Hua Jie declared, taking charge as the most senior person at the table. Naturally, Chen Liewei had nothing more to say.
After four rounds of drinks, Li Hao followed tradition and introduced everyone around the table. It turned out that not everyone knew each other; they had gathered here for Yu Rao’s wedding, an alumnus from Xiangtian University.
Chen Liewei was Li Hao's college roommate and brother; two of them were brought along by him. Hua Jie was busy chatting with Yu Rao when Li Hao approached.
The other two were also PhD graduates who had been recruited to Changlin City after graduation, but they did not work in Yurou County.
At the table, only Hua Jie and Lin Xiao were women; however, Hua Jie’s bold personality kept things lively.
After a few rounds of drinks, everyone was slightly tipsy, and even those who were unfamiliar with each other began to speak more casually.
"Li Hao, my son is already running around; you need to hurry up," Jiang Chennan, Deputy Director of the Agriculture Bureau in Changlin City, boasted while urging Li Hao. "Don’t just focus on work; you should find a sister-in-law soon."
"Brother Jiang is right; you need to get moving. I’m getting married in the second half of the year," Chen Liewei chimed in, with others nodding in agreement.
Lin Xiao found it amusing and smiled more openly. It turned out men could also be pressured into marriage. Seeing Li County Chief's expression resembling someone constipated made her smile even wider.
"I think our little junior sister is quite nice," another senior teased.
Lin Xiao perked up his ears to listen to the gossip. What was the relationship between him and his junior sister?
"Hey, Lin Xiao, what do you think of Li Hao?" someone called out.
Lin Xiao didn’t expect they were talking about him. He hadn’t even had time to retract his smile before he stood there, a bit dazed and unresponsive. In the workplace, Li Hao was the boss of Yurou County, so naturally, no one dared to make such jokes about him.
Li Hao glanced up and saw Lin Xiao’s adorably bewildered expression. This was the first time tonight he had seen such a genuine side of Lin Xiao.
Realizing Li Hao was looking at him, Lin Xiao quickly waved his hand. "Brothers, please don’t tarnish Li County Chief's reputation. Besides, I have a boyfriend."
Lin Xiao could tell that Li Hao didn’t like others saying that. Although his expression was generally calm, she could perceive the emotions reflected in his eyes, even if they were subtle; she could sense them all.
Just as Lin Xiao expected, when everyone heard she had a boyfriend, they stopped teasing the two of them.
Thanks to Hua Jie, Lin Xiao felt incredibly relaxed while eating.
